Crown molding bumping to window trim. What to do?

Hi, we are putting crown molding on the new bathroom, but just noticed our window is quite high. How to solve for the area where the crown bumps into the window trim?

Cut a slit of the crown and put over window? Will it work in terms of looks?

See picture. (BTW this is the old bathroom)

You could change out all the window trim to flat trim and then run the crown moulding over the flat trim, bumping it out around the top of the window.

How large is your crown going to be? Will it be much larger than the trim around the top of the window? If possible, I'd try to incorporate it so it blends into the crown. Like the third and last picture at this link: http://ttecustomhomes.com/portfolio-2/ceilings/

If there isn't enough room to do that, then you might just have to end the crown on either side of the window. I think it's called a return.

If you are hanging window treatments, you might also build out a valance over the window that integrates with the crown. I couldn't find a link directly to a picture, but on this page there is one about half way down on the right. http://www.traditionalproductreports.com/woodwork-historic.html

If all the windows are stained, and all the trim is painted, I think you are fine. As long as it follows a pattern, that is ok. There was another thread earlier about doors and paint vs stain and I think the conclusion was the same. If all the bedroom doors are one finish and the closets another, it is ok to mix. Just come up with a plan, follow it and you will be ok. There is no "one size fits all" here. Personally, I think stained trim can be lovely, but sometimes it can also be overload. I think having some stained and some painted may be the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the input. For some reason I cannot picture my crown being white with the other trim elements being stained. Dunno why. But if you say yours looks good, I do believe you. My house is a little ranch style 2/2 that we are remodeling from builder grade stuff to 'us'. It is a dwelling that is on a large piece of land that we use as our facility for training horses so I can feel pretty free to do what I want, since any potential buyers down the road will likely be more interested in the barn and land than the house, LOL! I have put rough slate on the kitchen floor, scabos travertine on the backsplash, and pretty much done it up in the kitchen altho I did not go custom with cabinets - used Ikea - and am thrilled, BTW. It looks great, IMO. The Acacia wood floor is so cool - natural graining and lots of movement. Altho I like the crisp, creamy trim against the darker wall color, I think using stained or even raw cedar boards with a sealing finish would be very appropriate. I also have some great cypress logs that I would like to bring into it if I can find a way. None of that - IMO - marries that well to the rather colonial looking white moldings that I presently have. Hub will be puzzled at my wanting to redo what looks pretty good right now, but as an artist and first time home redecorator in my 50s I aint wantin' to do it any way other than MY way! LOL! If I did NOT want to keep the crown white, does anyone have any suggestions / opinions? Pics are always appreciated, of course and would not mind seeing pics of that 1926 Tudor, if you have any. I dont really know how to post pics but would do so if it would help and someone can point me to directions. Ceilings in my house, BTW, are 8 feet. I am open to creative ideas and only limited by money as the husband is open too!

Depends on the style of the home but I usually use Sherwin Williams trim paint as it comes- it is just a clean classic white (that can always be matched since it is off the shelf) I have satin trim and matte walls.

Egg and dart would not be used on a vertical surface in any case. I lived in two Greek Revival houses (built c. 1830 and 1840) and they had egg and dart or lamb's tongue moulding as part of the pediment at the top of the major doors and 1st floor windows. It's a Horizontal molding. More or less like this, although my house more strictly followed the Order. It probably sounds pedantic to say the moulding should only be used a certain way, but it really only looks right as part of the proper assembly of pieces. Usually once you drop the capitals, from the assembly it's less common to see the egg and dart as well and it would more likely a cyma molding which looks a lot like the typical crown molding we use a lot now.

As TSG said two of the options are to incorporate the transition, or hide it. It is hard to know which will work best in your space without knowing how big the crown will be and what style you have in mind, etc.

I haven't picked yet cause I was waiting for the feedback. But I was thinking 3 1/4 or 4 1/4 and not too elaborate in terms of ridges and steps. GC said he could cut a slit and go over the window trim. I am just not sure if it would look good. Or maybe better completely replace window trim to a more basic one. Or a thinner one so there is space for crown above it. But the window is pretty high.
