Soup Mixes - Particularly Friendship Soup Mix
Comments (2)Nancy, I just googled "friendship soup" (using the quote marks) and found a lot of recipes. It seems to be mainly dried peas, lentils, barley and alphabet pasta plus when you make it you add ground beef and tomatoes. There were instructions for making a label with the additional ingredients but I didn't find any special sayings. Maybe the person made one up. There were sites with additional soup mix recipes too! Comments (13)I love the idea of turning Christmas decorating into Winter Decorating and have been trying to practice that the last couple of years. Just don't know how you can get it into one picture. Just to give you an idea - some of my changes have been: *My door wreath is just pine with a few cones and a few berries and a red bow. I put it out after Thanksgiving and leave it up until March when I put out a Spring wreath. I think I am going to update the bow to a polk-a-dot! *One of my vignetes is gold and white with greenery and lights - love to leave it up until the end of January sometimes. *I like to use red birds, birds nests, berries, pine cones, etc. Just winter items. *I want to add a brass item or two - a deer, partridge or quail, etc. *Lots of white/clear lights that brighten things up AFTER Christmas. *Snowmen and Snowflakes are good winter decorations - but I personally don't like that idea - I just don't like snowmen - they look too Christmasy....See MoreHolidays: How Do You Shop? Comments (9)Very sparingly. LOL Normally, I don't step foot in a store without knowing what I'm looking for. I'm not really a "browse around" type of shopper...I'm a get in, get what I need, and get out type of girl. I will spend more $$ to buy something quickly and in a comfortable (ie, not busy or bustling) environment just because it's worth it to me. If I see an item I've been waiting to buy on sale somewhere else at a higher price, I'll get it - saving the gas and frustration is totally worth the extra $$, IMO. Making most of my gifts means I don't have to shop as much, which I like a lot. LOL This year I have a book I need to buy for a gift, and some little stocking stuffers for my mom (I've already bought the usual christmas coffee samples for it), and some small gifts like a gift cert. to the dog groomer for one of their dogs, cat and dog treats, maybe some candles or potpourri. Luckily most of the women in my family read, so books are always an option - I like bookstores, so that is an easy shopping trip (though I end up buying myself stuff too - expensive). If I have to *buy* the gift, it will usually be something small from a smaller-type store, rather than something from department stores or mall stores. I try to keep bought gifts under $25 or so, but I try to get something the person will really like and appreciate, not just a "token" gift (which is why actually *shopping* drives me nuts LOL). Handmade gifts are a different story - I think nothing of spending $50 on yarn for an afghan or sweater, plus the time it takes to make. ;-) I don't do much shopping online, really - just books if possible. But I don't buy for that many people, so it's really not necessary (there are about 10-11 people on my christmas gift list...that's it). When I do go to the stores, it's usually early Sat. morning or in the evenings...sometimes I'll take a half-day on a Friday or something to shop if need be, but I never shop the day after thanksgiving or those type days. I do shop after Christmas sales if I have the $$...normally they aren't too busy, and it's a great time to find stuff for next year. :-)...See MoreHandmade / homemade holiday gifts
Comments (82)Justgottabe, the ornaments are wonderful. They would be simply beautiful on their own, but the meaning behind them makes them extraordinary. Priceless treasures. I don't have a lot of the ornaments my mom, grandmother and to some degree my sister and I made when I was young, and the beaded felt tree skirts haven't held up as well, but I treasure what we do have. I am still knitting -- might still be knitting after Christmas, but as long as I have these hats done beofre the boys go back to school, I will be satisfied and I know the boys will be fine with that. They got the matching scarves last year and know these are coming (I can't bring myself to pull out wool and start knitting when it's over 85 degrees outside -- and that wasn't that long ago). I did make a pair of baby alpaca cowls and make do some mitts to go with one. Started a crocheted hat too. We have all the kitchen goodies packed up and will mail 3 packages this weekend or Monday and then distribute the rest next week. Made 16 tins of peanut brittle on top of the ther goodies and will make stroopwaffels Sunday or Monday (have to wait for a front to pass through and the weather to improve for the caramel to behave). Jen -- ETA that I think your scarves look great and they will love them. The yarn for the guy is a great choice. I know what a hard time I had finding something I liked for my sons....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
