Remodeling Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Main Bathroom Design -- Tile/Flooring Opinions Please!

Hi everyone! We're designing our main ensuite bathroom in our new house. It's our first time doing this, so we wanted to get some opinions!

So far, the only thing we've chosen is this herringbone marble for the shower floor and this remnant for the countertop (second photo), though we don't have to stick with either of them. We found the charcoal floor tile and marble-like tile for the walls that you see in the picture, but we aren't so sold on it anymore. Does anyone have any advice/recommendations? We want to go timeless and can't do marble throughout.

I like the same tile for bathroom floor and shower walls usually in 12 x 24 porcelain .I do not like marble for shower anything and I aslo do not like niches . I think simple is the best plan for longevity.I also do not like any pattern in the floor and wall tile. You can add ab accent stripe on the shower wall in a vertical install and then use that tile for a backsplash if you want a bit of accent. I like a stacked pattern for tile and matching grout.

Thank you so much for commenting. Are you suggesting a totally plain white porcelain tile for bathroom floor and shower walls without any veining? I definitely like the simple approach. We really want it to be classic.

May I ask why no marble in the shower? What about for shower floor? I don't know if we were going to do backsplash.

Oh, I'm sorry. There is berber carpet on the rest of the floor where the vanity/sinks are. There is also a seperate area that closes off with a door where the commode is. It, too has white small tiles. What I would like to do is pull up the carpet, although it is only two years old, and put the same tile there as I put in front of the shower stall. I don't like carpet in a bathroom, but that is what we "inherited" when we bought the house. I'd also like to put the same in the commode area. Thanks for your reply. Yes, the mosaic is bordered by a thin limestone pencil tile. The white tile is thinner than the mosaic, so the pencil tile makes a nice transition between the two. This is not our tile, but it's the picture that inspired what we did with the pencil tile. Laying the tile out on the livingroom floor, just a single tile width, really helped to visualize what pattern we liked. I was going to do a full sheet of masaic (12") as the stripe, but when I laid it out it looked like too much mosaic. We played with the widths of the mosaic by cutting one sheet into 3" rows and adding or taking away sections to make different width strips. Doing this, coupled with taking the width of the cuts neccessary for the white tile into consideration really helped to visualize the look.

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

Are you doing new drywall where the base will go? If so, a nice modern touch is to do the tile or wood base flush with the drywall. The drywall would be run down to just above the baseboard height, and a reglet used to make a nice crisp edge. The tile or wood baseboard is then shimmed to be even with the drywall. http://www.remodelista.com/posts/remodeling-101-how-to-build-the-perfect-flush-recessed-baseboard-delson-or-sherman/ I have seen it done with same tile as the floor and it looks pretty amazing, IMO.

Marble is porous, often yellows with iron content of some water and etches with acid which is in most soaps and shampoo. A porcelain tile in a marble like finish is an easier maintenance product that can give a similar look.
