First of all looks like a great space. Mostly cosmetic updates which is great. I’d paint it white. Add a sectional couch , large rug, coffee table... a new light for sure. White floor to ceiling curtains. As far as the fireplace if you don’t want to overhaul it. I’d add least replace the mantle. On the sides of it I’m think built ins. Maybe a desk on each side as well. What do you think?

I love the fireplace stove. I never thought about a new mantle or replacing it. Would the white be too much? Would the built in look boxy on each side and how far up do you go?

As far as white paint. I personally love the look. But you can either sample it and decide or maybe even paint the room a pretty blue if you wanted color. The fireplace mantle just seems to be dating the space so that’s why I suggested replacing. Really with anything. The built ins was a recommendation because you said you wanted symmetry. I also think it would be super functional. If it’s all white. I don’t think it’ll be too much. You will be able to fill each built in shelf
With pretty vases , candles, books... so that’ll bring in more color. But if it sounds heavy I would suggest just going a board and baton or molding on the entire wall

No I love the idea and will definitely look into some paint chips for maybe a creamy white. The mantel scares me a tad bit but i am open and would probably look better chunky. Do you think it would be too much with TV over it if chunky?

Put the tv to the right of the fireplace. You'll have a much better height for viewing and it will look a million times better. Symmetry is overrated.

Don’t think the chunkiness would ruin the look. But when you have options show us and we’ll help with the decision. I might side with the hubby and vote for the TV above the FP. I think symmetry is importantly this room and especially if you will be thinking about it a lot

I would look at paint colors to complement the floor. BM Edgecomb Gray, Balboa Mist are possibilities. Definitely TV to the right of the FP. I would leave the FP as is for now. You haven't even lived there yet so don't really know what you like and dislike about the space.

I’m not a fan in general of TVs over fireplaces but recognize it’s sometimes really the best option. In your case, you don’t have to make that compromise. Plus the way your chimney narrows over the firebox means your fireplace is even less suited for a fireplace. I think you should hire someone to design a built-in to the right of the fireplace and also redo the mantel to make it look like they were designed together. You can have a TV on an articulating arm and it will be much, much better than over the fireplace.

Paint: I would wait on selecting a color until you have your furniture and accessories chosen. The present color (in picture anyway) feels washed out and a creamy white would be more modern and crisp.

- Built in‘s/tv location: with the width on both sides of fireplace being different, you’ll have to configure bookcases accordingly, if going that route. Suggest holding off on making a mantle change until you figure out wall - try to envision whole wall in your decisions

- Seating layout: really like your inspiration picture and as per the layout, centre to fireplace. If space in front of window feels bare, you could add the console table there vs behind couch as you enter

Placing the tv to the right of the fireplace will add some balance, wires will be hidden, no heat risk to the tv and no neck issues. You could put the tv on a swing arm depending on your furniture layout. You just need the right furniture piece to place below which will be cheaper than adding built ins. Do you know your furniture layout and room measurements?

Your recessed alcove to the right of the tv is a perfect place for the TV. Tell your husband you can fit a larger one there than over your fireplace. The connections are already there as well.
