Sherwin William Extra white Or Purewhite

Anyone did extra white over pure white and still likes it?? I am planning for the same color(in different Sheens) on cabinets, trims ,wall and ceiling. Confused between these two whites for a contemporary look. My house is North facing. Living room and dining in the south with lots of windows.

if I go with pure white, will it look good on the kitchen cabinets and trims?

Hi - using one colour of white in different sheens is a way of simplifying and uniting a space.

I would certainly test any of your shortlist choices on either large boards or Swatch-Right (paint-peel-stick decals), not directly on to the walls. This way you will have flexibility to move your samples around the space and view on different walls.

I would be looking to see if your light is abundant enough to bring the white to life. As with all near neutrals, whites are far more affected by the changing quality of light which hits its surface.

In some more dimly lit rooms, one may need a more colourful (higher Chroma) white than imagined, in order for it not to look permanently shadowy.

So you are trying to find the best white to partner the light available. If you have abundant light, Extra White will appear the more crisp and more neutral of the two, as it has the lowest Chroma.

Also note that the same colour on the ceiling can look somewhat darker and more greyed than the same colour on the walls.

If partnering 2 colours of whites or off-whites, a guide is you are looking for a minimum difference of 0.2 in Chroma, in order they will look fresh next to one another.

I can speak only to having done our master bath and closet, and it seemed crazy to me that the previous color was SW Accessible Beige (not dark) and we were redoing in BM Super White. The painters did not prime bath area before painting saying they prefer to just use the paint in more coats, which was absurd to me at $75 a can of BM paint! Took them 3 coats. I was responsible for doing the large closet and although I primed first, still it took two coats for full coverage. I would insist on priming 2 coats if necessary (and cheaper), matter of fact have the primer tinted to the room color might help too. I swear paint is getting thinner requiring more coats no matter what. I've used Behr, SW and BM and find this to be the case. Good luck to you!!

maxineshell - I went through the same dilemma as you. My painter liked using SW Pure White. I finally gave in and I can say that I am shocked at how white the trim has turned out after reading all the same articles and watching the same videos that you did. I did try a sample of Extra White and it looked blue against my polar white kitchen cabinets, which are more of an off-white. SW Pure White is a brighter, crisper white than my kitchen cabinets, but it only bothers me in one area of the kitchen above the range hood. We are going to get a color match to the cabinets and paint the hood 'trunk'. Here are some examples of my SW Pure White in different rooms, including the kitchen. Hope this helps you! The first house that I bought had pure white trim, ceilings, and cabinets. At the time, I had no idea there were so many shades of white. I figured you went to the store and bought white paint. I would've never guessed that it was anything other than what I would consider plain white. Now I've done my own looking through paint colors and I've seen how many different shades of white there are. Because I've had pure white in every conceivable room placement (N/S/W/E) and it all looked white to me, we used it in our new build, with rooms facing all directions. Still looks white. Never has it ever looked yellow to me. I imagine that the yellowness that you are seeing might be due to what's next to it/reflecting on it, not the paint itself. TL;DR I would go with pure white.
