Help with my vintage sink situation? Style mavens, grant me your
Comments (29)Raro, when you get to your next alternative universe, make sure you look on eBay. :-) That's where I found my sink. I was on eBay every few days for a couple of months but at last, there it was, and I got it for a touch over $1200, which isn't bad when you consider what a new "farmhouse" sink WITHOUT a drainboard or backsplash costs (see link below). You may have to search a zillion different ways; I had searches that looked like this: vintage sink -doll -dollhouse -toy -bath -bathroom -powder or antique sink -doll -dollhouse -toy -bath -bathroom -powder ...but it ended up paying off. Here is a link that might be useful: Farmhouse sinks...See MoreHelp me define my style
Comments (15)Che1sea, I think you're a candidate for my recommendation to look at English/European magazines/Web sites. The unfitted look is big there, the appreciation for worn and reused things. I like it because it's good for people who don't want to gut or add on, or can't because of site or materials restrictions (like a stone house) so it embraces quirks and uses the site and layout you have creatively. I like that it challenges me to THINK out a solution, not throw money at it. (Although some "simple" looking things turn out to be very spendy!) That last woodbine unfitted is pretty typical of a modern "shaker style" kitchen, featured in a lot of English magazines. Places to look: plainenglishdesign.com, The English Home magazine, Period Home magazine, BBC Homes and Antiques magazine, World of Interiors magazine (all available at my local Borders -- they can probably order them for you. Warning, they're about $8 apiece here. Some have Web sites with some photos.) I sat through a David T. Smith presentation, and there was only one kitchen that appealed -- apparently his favorite, one based on an old Maine kitchen. Most are too "done" for me. Someone near me has a Kennebec though, and it's just amazing. Too much a set piece for my house, but beautifully done. Are you looking for a single word or phrase? "Eclectic" is as close as you're probably going to get. Good luck!...See MoreHave no idea how to style my kitchen. Nothing "speaks to me".
Comments (114)Overwhelmed? Perhaps you feel overwhelmed with the many design decisions you face, as one decision may limit choices of the next. So, you don't love the Huzz's rug? It seems too small for the space. Does he have an office space? Tuck it in there- maybe? the foyer? Add a couple of green pillows to enhance the green in the rug? If it must stay in the room, then layer it on top of a plainer weave-natural looking rug. It doesn't have to be a jute rug, but a BIGGER flat weave natural colored rug.. So, all the furniture can be anchored with their front legs on the rugs. Use a glass coffee table for visual lightness. I like your wall art. I think adding a blue would help with using those images. Or....set the tone in your foyer or your hallway. What hangs in your hallway or at the end of your hallway? If you have no other home for them, those images would look lovely in a hallway or guest room or at the end of a hall above a chest of drawers. Another guideline is a Light, a Bright, and a Dark. Your wall art has the ocean in them...Let navy or forest green be your dark? However, it may be easier to find blues-navy rugs in the stores, rather than green. So..... Use lots of plants! Green plants give life to a room. Observe the use of plants in the model homes. I loved model home shopping in California, as all are staged beautifully with all of the available upgrades...,Where I live now... It's just floor plans and builder grade-ugh! This model house has a warm decor scheme- that reminds me of Huzz rug- warm greens, orange, brick & neutrals. I like the wood carving wall art and wood boat tray in the master bath.... (That natural elements were needed to transport an ordinary bathroom to restful place) https://tours.stevenjamescollins.com/public/vtour/display/394521 This house is cocoa brown and citrus with seagrass stools. https://tours.stevenjamescollins.com/public/vtour/display/427418 Perhaps you can add more plants to your decor to get the feeling you're after. The link below has over 50 model homes. You'll see fluid whole house color schemes in all, as well as many plants. Plants add life to a room, as well as an additional color- GREEN! https://tours.stevenjamescollins.com (Thank you for your kind words. I loved green and Asian accents, like woven hats. He loved blue, which I liked, but I did not want an all indigo house. Our design scheme evolved from our possessions and favorite colors.) These wood pieces - Uttermost Rennick- seen them in several model homes in the house as well as patio wall art. I love their handmade look. You could buy or DIY...https://www.amazon.com/Uttermost-04014-Rennick-Reclaimed-Brown/dp/B0061Q5YS0 Another version of wood wall art pecan wood Uttermost Fendrel mirrors (2setsof four here) They have been discontinued. So, now they are sold in clearance stores- save a ton! https://www.1800lighting.com/uttermost-fendrel-wall-mirror-1703188.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla&utm_campaign=uttermost&gclid=CjwKCAjw2cTmBRAVEiwA8YMgzT8ZOg0ZuQyIHHZLnhF6PXbjeH69nz6U3zURPNcpCP68qNMRwMJ_eRoCtbsQAvD_BwE...See MoreHelp me style my living space!!
Comments (6)I think that the Classic gray will really help to lighten the space. You have such a great base to start with! Are you wanting to keep the sofa or replace it ? I noticed it wasn't on your list of items that are staying. The Lottie chandelier has beautiful lines. It is BIG coming in at 49". Are you planning on shortening the height of it by using fewer down rods? What is the size of your table? I think the first thing I would do and this will be easy since you have new paint coming is to pull everything off the walls and decide what is coming back and what isnt. I think mirrors would be nice on either side of the fireplace vs the assortment of smaller photos and silhouettes. Those are making the space look cluttered. So once painted I would start there. Some vertical mirrors on each side.I would;d consider two smaller chests that match to go on either side of the fireplace with the mirrors above them. Keep them shallow so the chair if its staying can still sit in front of it. I also think I would bring in an actual chandelier to the family room space instead of the semi flush mounted one. How high are your ceilings? I would also consider a round end table on the side of the sofa closet to eating area. Everything you have currently is rectangular so I would break that up by bringing in a round table. Have you considered some simple drapery panels for the windows? Mounted high at ceiling height on outside each window so light isnt blocked?...See MorePaula Blay
