Advise please: area above kitchen sink

We are replacing orange cathedral arched doors and painting our boxes white. My installer added the four inch piece of wood above the sink under the light to help the cabinet on the right not feel like it's floating....I like the idea. What you can't see is the bottom is finished with the same exterior profile the new doors will have. And he's adding the scribe to the top of it once it is painted. But, do you think I should add something else? Have the doormaker build a longer more decorative piece? Or leave it as is, so it looks like a little bit of trim piece?

there is nothing wrong with single cabinet on the right. He's prepped this piece ....I would say because you need him to continue on........[is he your carpenter or painter or both or what????? ] you will hold the piece and when the doors are done and installed ....see what you feel about embellishing the trim and decide later...... your response: YOU don't know right now because the whole look will be changing. Basically I would reject the trim piece but it doesn't have to be put like that. Set the trim aside and continue with the project.

Thank you. He's my installer. I'm going to take it down....found another piece that has an arch to it, that I like better.

Do you get a lot of natural light? Are you going to use window treatment on the window? I would personally do a recessed light there since you do not want to detract from the window and the other unique lighting in the room. Good luck!

Fori, yes, the cat towel holder is staying . . thanks for the reminder! I totally forgot about that being black. Lots of votes for the lace curtain . . if I keep it, I have to hem that curtain! EAM44, thank you! I do like the suggestion of switching out the fan for a schoolhouse globe style and I love that pendand choice. DH said he can try to put the light on the wall provided there is no stud dead center but if I do put it in the ceiling, I was worried about it being too much and it being too close together. I do love the shutter idea and that may work. I considered those for my living room as we live right on top of our neighbors; however, the cats like to look out the window. The kitchen window is the only window they can't get too (well in a perfect world . . . ) Localeater, my sentiments exactly. I have this concern that I don't want it to look like a bath fixture but there are so many pretty lights to choose from. True, how often do you look straight up but I am tall and there are cabs on either side of the sink that I will access on a regular basis. It's almost a shame for the ceiling fan but we definitely need it. Shelayne, what a pretty fixture! Is the 8 inches the length/height (up and down) of the shade or the width (left to right)? Desertsteph, I'm so wrapped up in the countertop selection that I totally forgot I could change the shades on the fan and I think I will! Thanks. Annie, ooh! Very pretty! Thanks for the picture! Lavender_Lass, I'm glad to hear you love your wall oven! Everyone who has one seems to. I think I'll enjoy it, myself, and DH is already thrilled with the idea - he's even been checking them out at appliance stores, and he's never been that interested in ovens before. I agree that the space would really open up without the peninsula. We could do a small table and keep it simple at first, but we'd have the room in the future to expand a little, add chairs. Ashleymking, I actually love the open counter space of the peninsula, myself, and if it weren't for DH's bad back and therefore the desire for a wall oven, I'd almost certainly keep the peninsula. The 30" walkway is definitely too narrow, though - I would gladly sacrifice the peninsula space for a larger walkway. It feels cramped just looking at it from across the room. This may not apply in your layout, but for us, looking in through the dining room door, the peninsula actually extends into that line of sight, so if you walk straight across the room you could walk into it. More importantly, it's a real bottleneck for people passing through. Only one person can comfortably pass at a time (2 if you don't mind brushing up against one another!), and with an active 3-yr-old and 2 little dogs, we feel like we're constantly telling someone to get out of the way. This is compounded by the layout of the refrigerator being just off the end of the peninsula, so the walkway is totally blocked if someone opens the fridge door. It doesn't sound like a big deal - of course you can just wait a moment until the person at the fridge is done - but it annoys us every day. We felt that between 40 - 44" would work for us, larger being better. We arrived at that number partly by looking at recommendations in posts here on GW and partly by looking at the sight lines through the doors, measuring ourselves standing there 2-deep and just imagining "what if I wanted to do X..." scenarios. Well, there's my novel about our walkway, LOL! Hope that's useful to you. Marthasdream, it's funny, I had considered open shelving for the plans with the peninsula but didn't think of it with the wall oven/ open plan. Thanks for the reminder that they could still work there! My open shelf fantasy is actually to have a set of 2 or 3 with some room on one for cookbooks, and the bottom shelf having hooks for my most-often used pans. Perhaps the dream isn't dead!

Mime actually preparing something for dinner. The way your layout functions, you're gonna take those chicken breasts out of the refrigerator and put them in the sink to rinse, turn to throw away the packaging, turn back and wash your hands, and then grab a saute pan from under your cooktop to put on with some olive oil in it that you grab from one of the uppers by the cooktop. Oops, you forgot the garlic, so back to the fridge to grab the jar of already minced and some ginger to grate. Grab the grater from a drawer next to the cooktop, grate the ginger into the olive oil and grab a measuring spoon from another drawer to put a half teaspoon of minced garlic from the jar into the pan. Go back to dish storage area and grab a plate and go to the sink and move the chicken to the plate. Wash your hands again. Pat it dry with some paper towels and turn to the trash to throw them away. Grab some tongs and move the chicken from the plate to the saute pan. Turn to put the items in the sink to wash, or in the DW to wash. Go back to the fridge to get the zuchinni out of the produce drawer and again to the sink to rinse it off. Grab a cutting board and a knife from another cabinet, move the zuchinni to it and slice the zuchinni. Etc. In that scenario, you're gonna either be standing in that corner, or you're gonna add a BUNCH of twisting, turning, and extra steps (and dripping water on the floor!) to your movements by going back and forth from the island to the sink and back again. People have a built in economy of movement. We'll take the shortcut across the grass every time instead of walking around to use the sidewalk. You're gonna take the path of least resistance, which is to stand in the corner for the prep. Putting a water source on the island makes most of that activity actually make sense to take place on the island.

Keep whatever you add uncomplicated and make sure you don't block the light.

Consider adding some small Tiffany style sun catchers attached to the windows with suction cups to add your choice of color or vibe to the room.

This holiday time of year, you can usually find some good suction cups at Dollar Tree. The sun catchers are small enough to be easily stored so they can be changed out according to your mood or the season of the year or the holiday or the likes/preferences of the person you're celebrating.

Suncatchers can help keep birds from crashing into your windows.

Selectively collecting them -- only what you'll actually use -- can be fun -- something to look for not just new and on line but also in "used stuff stores": antique and thrift stores such as Habitat for Humanity and Good Will and Salvation Army, etc.. You may find you end up putting a few in windows in other rooms as well.

I sure hope you removed that horrible thing over the island that serves no purpose and all thea lighting needs to be LED bulbs in 4000K and remove that piece of wood or just paint it like the walls it is okay for cabinets to not have a bridge and why do you want an arched one you just removed the arches.if you want something there run the backspalsh tile up and over the window.Please no gee gaws on the windows do a nice faux roman shade for some color if you want to add color.

I agree keep it simple...no arch above the window...the reason for having it there is to connect the cabinets...not add a new feature that accentuates the arch on the cabinets..i like the added strip as it adds a little “custom” feel ..dimensional...not decorative

Removing bulkhead in center ?...if you are leaving it on exterior walls i would paint the bulkhead walls and trim the same color..to uncomplicate that feature

nothing over the window. I'd remove that trim, tile all the way around the window to the ceiling, and trim out the window w/new molding.

your current window trim is too fussy.

see how they've done it here?

or, for go the window trim and have the tile done as window trim.

install a sconce or pendant over the window.

or do a nice roman shade. but nix that piece of trim
