Do you have natural light coming in? I am not sure how small your kitchen is but if it is dark I too would avoid a dark counter. My former kitchen was 10 by 15 but it opened up to another room with buckets of light coming in from giant windows. Dark worked in that small kitchen. My new place (about to be a reno'd) has a bigger kitchen and I would not go with dark counters as it does not have natural light coming. I need to stick with a medium to light counter. What about a lighter granite with a traditional edge? Maybe like this one... If your instinct say the space is small and dark go with your instinct. A few other ideas that look so pretty. Maybe this one below would not work with the floors but the one above might.

Hey we have almost the same kitchen layout! I would take a cabinet door & a dark knob/pull to a stone yard and see what looks good. There are so many counter choices out there so sometimes it just takes seeing that one stone that fits your vision to pull it all together.

Tiffany - first I love the caramel leather with the dark blue walls! Scrumptious! On the topic of "dated" everything gets dated in today's fast paced world, and backsplash styles live about 5 years and then we move on. So, go with what pleases you most. I think the herringbone is lovely, but with your kind of minimalistic styling desires, the stacked subway would last longer, IMO. But I do love the herringbone as well. The only thing with the marble is you have to personally select every sheet so you get the whitest look you want. There is a wide variation typically, so keep that in mind. In other words, it will be more costly and more difficult to get a tiler who can handle this material properly. You don't have that much backsplash so, pretty much a personal choice. Hope that helps.
