Open shelves under an upper cabinet
Comments (19)Wooh we're in the middle of a blizzard! Being trapped inside makes me want to cook. Herbflavor~I originally had wanted everything in drawers, but my kitchen will be around 8'x10' so I was trying to free up as much space as possible to make sure I don't have to store things in the basement or something. I was testing last night on my toaster oven which happens to be be the exact height and depth of the (maybe floating shelves) I would use, and it was perfect for my arms reach. I store my mixing bowls under counter (although not in a drawer), and it's a pain. I use a lot of mixing bowls. Needinfo1~I know my little place will be far from Parade of Homes worthy. It is a very modest little house (960 sq ft), and the little U shaped kitchen will NOT be open to the living room. It will be nice to not have to worry about keeping my kitchen amazingly beautiful so I can really cook. Oh, and did I mention I'm a messy cook. : (...See MoreOpen shelves or a closed cabinet in this one little spot?
Comments (3)we aren't living in the house yet and the kitchen has been taken down to the studs. the cabinet plan is being redrawn for changes, and i left the last drawing on accident at the architects house : / you'll notice two little penciled in stools in the sketch - that's the peninsula. it would help if my picture weren't sideways. i had to turn my laptop around above the dishwasher will be the cabinet with glass doors. next to that cabinet where the kitchen ends and the breakfast room begins, I don't know what to put. I've seen pics with nothing and it looks unfinished or like something was forgotten, and there has to be backsplash there. maybe the open shelves will be fussy. the spot is about 2' wide. i like open shelves, but I've never seen them in a kitchen in this particular scenario - where a peninsula starts...See MoreSmall B&W Kitchen - Open Shelving vs Cabinets ideas?
Comments (10)Congrats. You have done a beautiful job so far. We consult on about 30 to 50 kitchens a year. Nice to see one as fun as this. Couple of points. Love the backsplash behind the stove. But any grease pops will hit the wall on either side. What if you do the white subway on either side of the backsplash you have and also on the sink side. It could be beautiful and functional. And since the tiles you have now are aligned, we would do the subway in a running pattern. (staggered) Love the visual idea of open shelving, if its fits your style and needs. And would love to see a little wood brought on to add a touch of warmth. Just look at the bit of warm color in the door mat, and imagine some of that warmth on the walls. And as far as the subway tile, it is totally fine to mix in a bit of traditional with the more contemporary pieces. This keeps the space eclectic and fresh, as well as more unique. Great job so far....See MoreOpen shelving - should bottom shelf be even with bottom of cabinet?
Comments (6)I'm no designer, so take my thoughts accordingly, but I think it would look fine with the lowest shelf a bit higher than the cabinet. Based on the location of the brackets and your comment about the shelves going around the corner, you won't have perfect symmetry anyway (which I think is fine) and with the mugs and corbel on the cabinet you don't really have a well-defined bottom on that side anyway....See Morebuildingsmall11
