no upper cabs-- open shelving instead?
Comments (47)I think everyone has pretty much covered this, but I thought I would add my experience. My kitchen has original (1920) cabinets and no upper cabinets. When we moved in we added some inexpensive shelving. I really like it. It's really easy to just grab a plate or bowl or whatever. The only advice I would have for you is to try to keep the color of the things on the shelves all in the same shade. It helps it look less cluttered. Comments (3)hi Deanna, Are you considering open shelves (free hanging) or open cabinets (boxed in but with no doors)? They are both great looks, and very useful around sinks. Will you have painted or wooden cabinetry? Here's one with an open cabinet: and open shelves: Then of course there's CRAZY amounts of shelves ;-) :...See MoreOpen shelving instead of uppers?
Comments (32)Like Tami, I took the doors off of one wall cab to expose three open shelves that work great: on bottom sits the microwave, in the middle all of our daily glassware (no dust since we store our glasses upside down), top is cookbooks. Works splendidly and really lightens up that wall. It works so well that I'm planning on installing more open shelving as I go along in my remodel. Quite honestly, I've never liked the look of the American built-up kitchen with marching closed-off cabinetry that matches top and bottom, so this works aesthetically as well as functionally for us in our 1920's bungalow kitchen. Thumbs up!...See MoreUpper into open shelving at a corner
Comments (4)We ended up butting the shelves to the full cabinets so that they got 2 points of contact. its been 4 years with no sagging, The shelf on the left has plates and the one on the right cast iron pots so we definitely use them. I think it really make the space feel open. I apologize for the state of my kitchen, but we have 3 kids and use the hell out of it...See MoreIowacommute
