Upstairs design help
Comments (18)We sort of have one overlooking our great room as in the photo you showed, but ours is wider and just awkward. While we actually do like the high ceiling room below and use it all the time, mostly we get annoyed by the waste of space on the landing/catwalk and the fact that it seems to catch things we don't know quite what to do with immediately. We have one daughter, and she absolutely does throw things over, but is pretty good about only throwing clothes and papers - the one time she threw something harder she got in big trouble, so there hasn't been a repeat. For us the upshot is we're currently designing a new house, and our architect has specific instructions NOT to create similar space....See MoreOur solution to tiny back entry design dilemma
Comments (3)This is super adorable! My first home was also a circa-1960s ranch bungalow (also in Canada) with that type of rear entry - I think it is ubiquitous across homes of this era in Canada and as you know it can get a bit crowded, especially in winter with all the added necessary winter gear - and I wish I had thought of something as clever as that shoe wall. We just had one of those little cuts outs in the lower part of the wall where we piled our shoes instead. Great job!...See MoreDesign Dilemma- update exterior colour scheme for curb appeal
Comments (11)If the goal is to upgrade the curb appeal, I would look to landscaping because your house colours are mostly working as is. That said, you're showing the Gentek samples which I'm assuming are for the soffit. The soffit doesn't actually show so I'm not sure why you're starting there. They help bounce light into your windows, so going with the lightest colour that goes with your lightest bricks (NOT white) would be a direction for the soffits. The door and siding are an entirely different matter. The brown that you have now on the siding goes perfectly with the darkest brown bricks. Just refresh it. The thing that looks out of place is the overly white vinyl windows and door. I'm guessing the windows can not be painted so that leaves the door . (If the windows could be painted, a beige colour that tied back into the brick would be the idea. ) The front door could/should be a different colour than the siding. The natural wood tone suggested by Freedomplace1 would work with your brick if you changed the door, but probably not as a paint colour. What were you thinking for the door?...See MoreBuying a land dilemma
Comments (20)The biggest unknown (meaning risk / unexpected expense) with a build project is what it takes to get the building "above ground" - so you are smart to ask these questions. On the filled lot, you could see if the density was decent enough to support a house - there are professionals that do this type of thing - we filled out build site and had the geotechnical engineer out there about 10 times to measure the density of each 6-8" lift. If the fill was not controlled or haphazard or differing in materials - you could be in a position to have to redo it. I would consider engaging with a soils / geotechnical person to assess each site - if you have to blast rock - at least that's "known".......See MoreRedRyder
