My first idea for you Carrie, since you mentioned yu have a single mattress to use, was to find a king size head and footboard to make into a day bed like you would make a bench out of a smaller bed. If you have a holliwood frame for your bed all you'd have to do was cut the footboard in half and attach it to the ends of the headboard and then to the frame. Plop on the mattress and dress the bed! My second idea is similar to Lynn's. Make a platform the size of the mattress with large pullout drawers. Only I'd find a simple twin head and footboard cutting the head and footboard to be just high enough to hold a bolster at each end looking more like a backless sofa. As for protecting the mattress, I agree that a waterproof mattress cover would take care of the worry of rain. And for the idea of a swing bed....here's one of my favorite beds from my inspiration albums. You wouldn't want to actually swing on it, but it could certainly sway you to a deep sweet dream filled sleep.

Since the tv is going to stay as it is, I would then move the couch to the stair wall, where it has more wall space and open floor around it to feel less crowded in. I would put the matching loveseat across from it, where the cream one is now. I would also try to slide the tv to the left a bit, just to give some breathing space between it and your very pretty stone fireplace. The odd piece could then go on the wall where the couch is now. But while you say it is comfy, is it worth the hundreds of dollars it will cost to re-upholster? Could it go somewhere else in the house for those bad back/stress moments (perhaps the master bedroom or a family room?)and then get two comfy upholstered chairs in an interesting fabric, not leather, to go where the couch is now. Obviously you need some end tables and lamps or floor lamps for lighting in the room; what you have is not adequate to create a warm, friendly space. I would also take down those small pieces of framed art and hang them together on one wall, side by side or one over the other. They look lost as they are. Wood blinds or woven wood blinds in a shade like your floor would be nice. If that isn't in the plans, panel drapery either side of the window to bring in some softness, color and pattern would be great. I would take all the tiny stuff off the mantel - it is lost up there. Also, I would replace the mantel shelf with a stained wood, again to compliment the flooring. The white doesn't play nicely with the interesting stone.

DancingQueen, If you like the one with circles, here is a similar one from Allbed, in metal instead of wood: I don't like the higher arm that the metal one has but it still has a different look than the typical daybed. I think the lower arms and back is what makes the West Elm daybed look so refreshing. Most daybeds being sold look like baby cribs: This one I imagined was Martha Stewart's prison cell - standard issue cot with pillows added to soften the harsh angles, probably embroidered with dental floss. The other popular style daybeds have is the barn animal feed bin look: And then of course the hospital exam table look: If the daybed will be used as a sofa more often than as a bed for sleeping try getting one that is not twin size, but rather a cot size. It will be more comfortable for seating and still double as a bed for an overnight guest, and not take up so much floor space in a tiny room. This Harry Probber cot sized daybed is not as deep as a twin size. This one here also is a cot size and make seating easier but the cool thing about it is that it opens to form a much larger bed: The bed I posted earlier a few posts back not only is a single size daybed but converts to a queens size sleeping arrangement OR two singles. Plenty of options for overnight guests.

Well, changing linens won't be that much of an issue, since it might get slept on maybe twice a year....but I do wonder if the back on the Overstock one is just too high. I have now realized that the "day bed" in the inspiration pic isn't even a day bed after all! Just a regular twin bed. I still want a day bed. This may be my late summer/early fall project. This house was reno'd 7 years ago and we just threw stuff in the room without much thought. Now my wheels are turning... of course I'll need a different (taller) table and a new rug and and funky floor lamp or wall sconce...and of course tons of pillows.
