Marble tiling - What should i know?
Comments (9)You will need to buy a good amount of extra tile. Marble varies considerably in color and can have natural deviations in it that you may not want to use. No guarantee the color will be consistent within any box or from box to box. As stated above, be prepared to sort and arrange it. You may end up using some tiles that you don't like. Also, when cutting, sometimes there are natural inclusions that you can't see, so if you cut across the inclusion, you end up with pieces you didn't plan on. You need to be careful with the type of mastic/thin set you use. The tile surface, but not sides needs to be sealed before you grout, otherwise the grout will stick to the surface of the stone tile, something that doesn't happen with glazed ceramic. Then you have to seal it again after it's grouted. With buying over the internet, be prepared for breakage and having to deal with damage claims, and extra time waiting for replacement tile. You may not have problems, but you need to plan for the possibility in case you are on a tight schedule. I ordered our backsplash tile online, and the first shipment was not delivered because it was totally broken up before it even got to us. About 30% of the replacement was broken also. When we finally got the balance of the tile, it was not quite as good quality as what we received before. We had ordered plenty of extra, and sorted the tile several times, using the less appealing tile where it would show the least. We had done two floors and a fireplace with marble before we did our backsplash, as well as several ceramic tile projects before that, so we had an idea of what we were dealing with when using the stone. If you are installing it yourself, get as much information as you can. If you are hiring an installer, make sure they know how to work with stone....See Morewhat type of marble etc around fireplace for 1890's victorian
Comments (5)I missed out on a house built about 1880 when I was looking (long story, but there was another offer I wasn't told about, otherwise I'd have bid right there)...anyway, this house had four fireplaces, and the owners were the children of the original buyers. All four fireplaces had wooden mantels, but the surrounding area of the firebox was covered in tiles about 1" by 3". All the tiles were a mottled medium green color, which I also remember from my grandmother's house. In my neighborhood (a historic district), almost all the fireplaces have tile rather than marble...I don't know if this is a Columbus quirk or what, but it seems to me from reading that marble may have been used in more expensive houses and earlier in the century, say about 1860. Upshot is, marble depends on how fancy your house was originally and it's age--the latter part of the nineteenth century had tile surrounds with wooden mantels, while earlier houses commonly had slate mantels with iron surrounds between that and the firebox--like those in a friend's house, and my sister's old rental, built in 1815....See MoreShould I seal my marble shower floor and walls myself before grout??
Comments (29)I spoke to one of the workers today and told him it was industry standard to use this plastic. I don't know anything about curbs or mud, or any of those other words. I asked him about this book, and of course, he looked at me like I was crazy. My husband spoke to the contractor who said this is totally unnecessary, and that he has been doing this for years this way, even in his own house. -- I told him .- this puts me in a weird predicament because I don't want the job to be done wrong, and I'm not convinced that this is right. We are at a stand-still. I want to take a hammer to those tiles-- I am waiting to hear from the store-owner who sold me the tiles and ask her advice about what I can do now..... I am also going to ask her about the glass shower tiles with cold and hot water. This is why I hired a Contractor -- I don't want to make all these calls and teach myself how to install a bathroom, or a floor, or a fireplace! Creative - I cannot thank you enough. I looked through the book you are referring to. The contractor thinks I'm reading into everything because this isn't the first thing I've complained about.... This is the text he sent me this morning "The vinyl on floor and up walls about a foot and up seat area and on wall behind you do not need on walls unless steam shower nobody puts on wall you are reading to much No concern my own shower is done like this"...See MoreMarble tile issue - why us my replacement piece turning a weird dark c
Comments (4)I'm not sure what he did. It doesn't look polished. I would use diamond honing to try to remove the surface but you can try sandpaper to gently sand those tiles. It will be tricky though. Try, starting at 120 grit then 220, 400 to see if it blends. OR as SJ McCarthy indicated, sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie....See MoreJJ
