Help fixing scratch on table, refinishing

I would like help on ideas for fixing the large scratch on this table. It has veneer on it. I am kind of considering stripping the finish off and putting polyurethane on it but I am not sure that that is a good idea. It is an antique table and might have a shellac finish but I am not really sure. I am having to be super careful with it and use cork placemats because anything less will leave white cloudy messes that do clear up. The table is super solid and the drawleafs work well. I am worried that if I strip the table top that some colour would come out and I might not be able to get it to match again. It has a super rich dark nice colour. Regardless, I need to fix the scratch one way or another. I am not sure if I can just sand the scratch and then touch up the finish with something else??
