Need help: refinish a vintage Louis XV style table (pictures)?

Hi all--

My wife and I bought this table from a Raleigh, NC, antique warehouse a little while back. It appears to me to be a pretty recent (1940s or 1950s?) Louis XV style table. (Never mind those chairs in the picture! They'll be replaced with something that works.)

It has some serious scratches and can't really work as "distressed" because its ivory-colored lacquer finish is too shiny for it. We're trying to figure out what to do--looks to me like we have two options:

1. Spend a lot of time finding someone to repair the scratches--matching the lacquer and patina--and a lot of money, probably. I'm guessing this table is not very valuable or a super antique, so I'm not too worried about ruining it from that perspective--but I'm not sure.

2. Sand the whole thing down and paint it. (This also has the advantage that we could match chairs to it more easily.)

Some notes about the table:

- it has three leaves and can seat 12

- we don't have chairs to match it

- it has Walter of Wabash table slides

- the carved legs are in good shape

Please let me know what you think, both regarding any guesses about the table itself, as well as recommendations for finish (or chairs!).

Thanks very much!
