Front screen door drags on cement - how can I fix this to allow a rug?

Hi - we just moved into our new home and when I went to decorate the front porch the first thing I did was set out my welcome mats. To my dismay, I realized there was no clearance for any sort of rugs. Is there any solution to fix this? It actually drags on the cement. Any advice would be appreciated!

Not really. The concrete was poured to high as there should be a slight step or drop off there. The bottom expander is already as high as it can go. You could completely reframe and raise the entrance door opening and subsequently the entrance door and the storm door so there is a gap between the saddle and the concrete.

If the door is wood, cut off at bottom enough to allow for a rug. Be sure it remains long enough to function properly.

Any suggestions about door paint colors, given the existing other colors? I think a black door can look super elegant in many cases, but maybe wouldn't work as well with my shutters which are dark brown. Interesting about not installing new plants when a house is on market. My thought was that filling in a blank space (within reason) might look better. My market is probably first time home buyers. Younger people who aren't yet gardeners may not see the value/ potential of a blank slate. Indoors, my realtor and a friend have said my minimalist furnishings are cold looking and need some strategic items to make rooms more inviting. Considering that, I was thinking a couple bigger plants would make the outdoors -- by magic! -- more inviting. I take your points about the addition of permanent plants not being 100 percent called for in home selling. I'm probably dreaming outside of my budget anyway. To answer publickman, storm doors insulate the primary door against winter cold air/ summer hot air, and protect the primary door from driving rain. Maybe storm doors were first developed for entrances that don't have a porch or other roof. Also many storm doors have screens for summer use. Thanks again everyone.

Wowza! I love reading everyone's posts. Thank so much. I was away for several days because of house showings. Each showing requires a lot of prep work (long story, but pets are involved too). BTW, mortgage rates just dropped in the last few days, so more people started house shopping right now. What a great bunch of ideas and insights here. I love the posts with sharp analyses too. The photos people posted here look great too. As some people mentioned, my budget is really small. For now, here's a quick update and one question: So far, I've pruned the shrubs to better proportions. I pulled out a groundcover that was raggedy this time of year. Things look a little better. Will be considering doing more. Question. This subject is beyond my grasp and I'm confused: After I remove the storm door, I think the choice of paint color for the door framing could affect the visual proportions of the house. For example, if the framing was the same color as the door, the door might look bigger. If the framing were a different color than the door color, the door might look smaller. I don't know if this is true. But if true, what would be the desirable color choice considering the house proportions and other colors present? Another factor that might influence color choice: I just noticed that the primary door is recessed about five inches behind the front edge of the door framing. Also the framing itself is not the front most surface of the house. That is, the front edge of framing is behind a layer of brick, and on top of the brick are the shutters. ( Earlier I was thinking about a framing color as if the framing were just a shallow picture frame on the front surface of the house). I might be confusing myself with these thoughts... j'ai enfin retrouvé ce poste de ma dernière lecture de il y a 1 ans que j'endure le problème de déverrouillages. Maintenant elle ne verrouille même plus a chaud. Plutôt que d' affaiblir le ressort j'ai approfondit les 2 encoche de plastique ( la petite encoche) des 2 coté du dit ressort avec une scie a frette de Guitard (scie sans chemin et très mince)...... je me suis rendu au fond . Résultat très (trop) concluant mais j'y suit aller trop loin et maintenant la porte verrouille des que je la ferme. Je projeté d'étirer le ressort mais j'hésite car c'est viable tel quel juste a déverrouiller la porte manuellement. Les pointes et la micro switche ont été nettoyer et tester mais le problème ne viens pas de la.... (Je suis technicien sur des spas.... j'assume mes résulta sur ce que j'avance...) Mon impression c'est que a l'usure du temps et le poids de la porte en verre associé a l'usure des penture de la porte fait pression sur le mécanisme et empêche que le loquet de travail librement ce qui pointe sur le fait que le loquet neuf ou et la carte ne change rien...... Les bobine ou les relais sur la carte peuvent ne pas aider a avoir une belle impulsion pour l'électro aimant. donc dans certains cas cela peut aider.... et un relais ca se change en boutique électronique pour je dirais 50 a 75$$ et non 800$$$ pour la carte au complet donc pas beaucoup a perde dy mètre 2 relais neuf ......

your porch is fine, but that garage door is thoroughly meh. painting might help. I think a dark charcoal with the same undertone as your roof could look good for this and your front door. or an off-white that matches the other trim. I also agree with you that the flower window should go. and it's kind of a big blank brick area there. a very large window would look great, something with 3 or 4 panels. no grids, it's not right for that house. I tried a version with a modern garage door with windows, and it seemed kind of too stark for this home. this is a midcentury home, but it's not exactly MCM.

Its an aluminum storm door that swings out that drags.

Simplest thing to do in order to use the welcome mat would be to remove the storm door.

Based on the picture; the cover (bottom expander) on the bottom of the screen can be removed, the bottom of the door cut and the cover put back on.

The expander is not original to the door. I would remove it because it looks tacky.

Aluminum storm doors aren't meant to be shortened. Even if you could shorten it, you would be left with a big gap under the storm door which would negate the purpose of a storm door.

I also considered removing the storm door. My only concern is; is it necessary to have one? I live in Central Wisconsin on acreage. Granted, I am surrounded by trees, and the attached garage does create a barrier on one side.

I would go without the rug, before I would remove the storm door. Yes, it helps in very cold climates to have a storm door.

Could you put your rug beside the front door?..then opening the storm door will not interfere with the rug.

I'm in central WI, too, Missa. I would keep the storm door. Bitter winters + very nice days in the spring, summer & fall when it is nice to open up the windows & doors, get fresh air & outside cool inside.

We had a problem with our storm door due to being by the shoes always a breeze and when we opened the door it would take it flying into the column so we ended up removing both doors and installing therma-tru all in one half the door is window /screen couple of levers push up half the window and screen is there

Does it drag only on the latch side? if so, the hinges/screw probably need to be reset - perhaps shimmed. There are things that can distort the hinges, such as kids who like to swing on the door...
