Yay! I have a pretty pink one that I use to weigh the wax and fragrance for my candles and cubes.

I have used it for diet purposes, like weighing cheese i want to snack on when i am really into it. It is really handy around the kitchen! Congrats!

Some scales need adjustment/calibration.

Weigh an empty glass, the add 8oz of water. A pint is (a little more than) a pound the world around.

I bought a jewelry scale to weigh salt when I am making sauerkraut. It's probably more accurate than I need, however, and I did buy another scale that will weigh up to 13# and seems to have the accuracy that I need for salt. In fact, I used this one instead of my jewelry scale, which I left in Cathedral City, thinking I would make sauerkraut there. The jewelry scale will only weigh up to one pound, but it is accurate to 0.01 grams, whereas the larger scale is accurate to about 0.2 grams. It claims to be more accurate than that, but this is what I have noticed from using it. Still, when I want to measure 6 grams of salt for 3 pounds of cabbage, ± 0.2 grams is close enough, as that is an accuracy of ± 3-4% of the amount that I want. I will make a point to bring the jewelry scale back with me when I return from CC, however. I think I will use it more here than there, and I bought two of these scales, so that I will have them in both locations. I especially like them for measuring butter.

You can also measure in grams. There should be a button to change it if you want. I don't trust the included fluid measures. Yeah, by definition, a litre equals a kilogram under normal pressure, etc., but I'd rather use a liquid measure for liquid measures. 'Course, I put my nice measuring jug on my scale to weigh water for bread, but that's for the convenient spout. :) I'm weighing in grams not ml. :)

Grams are easy for water. 1kg = 1 litre

I don't think weighing things makes you nuts, but I don't know what you deleted. Whatever it was, I'm pretty sure it would not make you sound nuts - at least not to me!

I measure dried pasta before I cook it, and I generally allow 2-1/2 ounces per person. I don't want to cook too much and have leftovers, but I want to cook enough.

Nice yellow tomato you have EdieJ, but I can't see much of the scale. It looks like the tomato is precariously balanced. I like that the display extends out from the scale, making it easier to read. What does the rest of the scale look like?

I grew an heirloom variety called 'Great White' once upon a time that looked like that. They were delicious.

That’s a cool looking scale. It looks easier to read then the two I have, which I have to contort myself to see if I’m using a large bowl or plate. And that’s a nice tomato.

What a cool scale!! I use mine most often for weighing the cats food. I planned on using it regularly when making bread, 600 grams for 5 cups flour. I did it once, then promptly forgot about it.

Jim, I sent you an email with my Cathedral City address, which is where I will be for the next three weeks. We are going there on Saturday, despite the heat, as I have things I need to do there.

EdieJ, how have your found the accuracy of this scale to be? I really cannot order any more scales at this point, since I now have four, but I am still curious. My oldest scale (which I've had for more than 20 years) is not very accurate, which is why I bought a replacement for it.

Lars, I will have to check. Does a "pound" of butter actually weigh a pound? If so, I can put 4 quarters on the scale and see what it measures at. Good question, thanks! I hadn't thought about that.

Well, I would say it appears to be pretty much accurate. I put 1 stick (1/4 lb) of butter on the scale and it came up 4.0 ounces. Did it again with a different stick, same result. So I am really thrilled now!

I use mine all the time and I love it for things like caramel sauce- pour everything into the pot and no measuring, just weigh each ingredient.

I grudgingly bought a scale for baking bread. Now I have shifted completely to baking by weight. And weighing dough balls to the gram. And weighing packages of veggies to freeze. And weighing my produce. And lots of other things.... One of my most used kitchen gadgets. Enjoy your scale.

Jeffrey - I’m a little unclear on what you’re asking. But I would recommend testing a scale for accuracy if it’s a concern. Here’s a post of mine from 11 years ago:

”I like my Salter. Whichever way you go, I recommend testing it for accuracy while you can still return it. Believe it or not before my Salter I had a Polder which was off by about 1/2 ounce on a pound. Critical? Probably not. But enough to make me retire it.”

I very much dislike having scales turn themselves off after two minutes because many times I am not finished adding ingredients to the scale before it turns off. For instance, one recipe that I have requires 50-60 grams of grapefruit peel, and so I put an empty container on the scale, set the tare to zero, and then start making grapefruit zests to add to the scale. However, this takes longer than 2 minutes, but if I turn the scale back on, the tare is wrong, and I have to take all of the peel out of the container. This is rather irritating, and so now I have to make a bunch of zest, hoping it will be the right amount, and then weigh it.

Some chefs like to keep adding ingredients to a bowl that they have on a scale (I do not do this), but of course this does not work if it takes you longer than 2 minutes to add the ingredients.

Another thing I do is just weigh the empty bowl, write down its weight, and mentally subtract that weight from the measurement. This is fine if the weight of the bowl is easy to subtract, but this is not always the case.

I also bought a second jewelry scale so that I have one at each house. I need it for weighing small ingredients like yeast and salt when making bread or pizza dough. I weigh flour when making pizza dough but not when making bread.

Maybe, maybe not. Three posts to date, all bumping older conversations and including purchase links. I’d not have responded if I had seen the link but it was edited on several hours adter posting.

Anyway, Lars, I share your frustration re shutoff. I handle this two ways. One is to have the scale near where I’m working and tap it every now and then. But invariably I wait too long once and the effort is for naught. The second is to use a plate or bowl from my regular dishes. They are consistent in weight, so I will do my thing with one bowl, and when ready to weigh I’ll tare with another.

But they really ought to either extend shut-off time or work out another system.

Very coincidentally, while cleaning out my old house yesterday I stumbled upon a 100g calibration weight I had lost. After all these years my Salter is grungy and falling apart, but spot on accurate.

Lars, don't your scales have a reset button? You start the scales. Put your bowl on and press reset and it goes to zero. That way you don't have to subtract the weight of your bowl.

Islay, yes but what he’s saying is he wants to tare the scale and then remove the bowl. That’s fine for a few seconds but once the scale shuts off the tare is lost. This is a frequent annoyance for me, too. Also when you’re multitasking, need to step away to tend to something else in the midst of weighing something and the darned thing shuts off. I understand the benefit of auto shutoff, but several minutes would be nice. I just timed mine and it’s a minute which seems like an eternity when waiting for it, but very quick when you’re actually using it and don’t want it to shut down.

Mine takes a little longer on the auto shutoff, but I also have a list in my bread utensils holder with the weights of the vessels I'm most likely to use on the scale. More than a dozen. I don't do annoyed well, and demand solutions. :)

Islay, what I was saying is that I do use the reset button after I put the bowl on the scale, and it goes to zero. Then I start adding the grapefruit peels, but before I get to 50 grams, the scale shuts off. When I turn the scale on again, it goes to zero again, and so I have to remove all the grapefruit peel before resetting the scale. This is not terrible with grapefruit peel, but it is annoying when adding liquids or powdered ingredients. The scale does not give me enough time to add all the ingredients I want before it shuts off.

I have a Polder scale that is about 30 years old, and it takes much longer to shut off and has never shut off on me before I was finished weighing. However, it is not as accurate, as FOAS noted.

Lars, intersting that your Polder isn’t accurate either. Makes me feel better about naming them publicly, evidently not just a one-off issue.

I use my scale all the time without issue. I should pay more attention next time. I believe i just tap and it goes right back to the issue i've been working on. Not any re-set. Or do-overs.

It would be good to have a scale with a memory so that I could tap it to go back to what I was working on, but mine do not.

If you have a digital assistant in the kitchen, like Alexa, you can tell it the intermediate weights.

That's an oldie but goodie. :D I don't have much use for mine, but it's priceless for what I use it for. I wash my hands constantly in the kitchen, and hate adding to that ro make a note, add to a shopping list or set a timer. Plus, it tells time, accurately, out loud, unlike certain useless people who grunt...

Lars, I had a Polder scale for probably 20 years. It got wonky so I called Polder thinking I could send it in. Customer service said "we haven't made that scale for some time" ( can't remember how many years), so I ordered the SS Oxo that has a pull out for large bowls/items. I'm glad they couldn't fix mine-this is light years ahead of my Polder.

Scales shutting down too fast is very frustrating.

I am in no way offended or bothered by Jeffrey Gregory. Very strange to bring this up on a thread that has not been active for two months. I think Jeffrey has good information and his comment should be left as it is. I do not see how it is doing anyone any harm.
