Sarah Burke of Studio Burke did a phenomenal job assisting us in our whole house renovation and addition. She understood our taste and was able to help up choose finishes which complemented the mid-century modern vibe of the existing house. She simplified selections of tile, stone slabs, plumbing fixtures and accessories, hardware and cabinetry. We were out of the country for periods of time during the renovation and she assumed the role of project manager for us, communicating with the contractor and the subs to make sure the placement of electrical elements was correct and that the correct paint colors were applied in the right areas, along with many other details. She had great resources for various aspects of the work. Sarah was a pleasure with whom to work. We truly do not know how we would have completed our project without her.

Sarah was a joy to work with on the gut renovation and modest expansion of our midcentury modern home. She is warm, smart, conscientious, caring, thoughtful, responsive and professional. She has excellent taste, a refreshing lack of ego, an impressive work ethic, a gentle sense of humor and high integrity. She was respectful of both our opinions and the home, while sharing ideas and opinions of her own, providing the guidance we sought. She was proactive in connecting with our contractor, subs, service providers, and a host of material and fixture suppliers. During our extended and periodic absences from the area, she functioned, in a sense, as our project manager, overseeing and checking everything, to the smallest detail. Just terrific!

At first, Sarah just helped us get my mom's old wingback chair reupholstered. Now it is our nicest piece of furniture! We liked her so much that we hired her to remodel our kitchen. She is quite intuitive and is particularly good about blending her extensive knowledge with the tastes of her married clients. I joke with her about being part couples' counselor. We both LOVE what she she did in our kitchen: Unique, beautiful, completely respectful of our budget, and the perfect blend of "us." As I have come to realize, she really knows her design industry and so I also implicitly trust that she will always steer us in a sane and tasteful direction. Would we use her again? Hell yeah!

As if those two traits were not already enough, she is a phenomenal listener (especially to couples who might have different styles) who takes in the conversation, photos & style preferences and then comes back with a design that is beautiful, harmonic and appeals to both parties. Sarah Burke brings collaboration to new level. Unlike several other designers I interviewed for my kitchen, bathroom and bedroom redesign she engaged me as a partner. I had a well developed design concept, the product of living in my pre-earthquake Potrero Hill cottage for 25 years. She listened to me. She listened to the space. She had the hands to take my vision forward. We had lively conversations exchanging views. She offered robust ideas, some adopted, some not. We critiqued a succession of drawings until we arrived at the design. She was patient. She possesses a sophisticated knowledge of materials – the juxtaposition of materials, texture and color – that brought the best out in the plan. She accompanied me in the search for stone over many hours and thousands of slabs until we discovered the right granite. She is sensitive to cost. She knew when to yield to the contractor and cabinet maker and when to take a stand for the integrity of the design. Productive exchanges were had by the four of us to work through the final cabinetry design. Sarah’s aesthetic is now woven into my ever more beautiful home.

Working with Sarah on our new house was an incredibly wonderful, educational, and fun experience! I cannot recommend her highly enough--she has made an enormous difference in how we will enjoy and interact with our new space. Sarah has a wonderful aesthetic that blends easily to that of her clients, as she is a tremendously gifted and creative listener. Given her additional training as an architect, Sarah also has a keen gift for spatial relations--and our house is not gigantic, with lots of functional requirements, including conversion of space for visitors, accommodating a growing family, etc...typical urban living issues! What she was able to do in a short time was nothing short of miraculous in terms of helping us maximize our available space and bumping up the style "value" of the house. On top of those accomplishments, she was very sensitive to our budget restrictions--and really came up with some incredibly creative options--multiple options on each item--to help us stay within our goal. We actually took ALL of her suggestions, every single one, as they were a result of careful consideration and research and really just made sense in every case. Sarah is also very versatile--she can move easily between high end and budget clientele with the same warm, respectful, easy but focused approach. I never felt like I was losing out for opting for the lower budget version of a piece, and she helped me think through which pieces made the most sense to invest in. That is a rare combination in a professional! Again, I cant recommend working with her on your design and spatial needs more highly enough.

Sarah Burke Design designed the living room of my dreams. Sarah worked within our budget, and with pieces that we owned, listened to what we wanted and was able to source and install a gorgeous living room. I would definitely work with her again and highly recommend her.

Sarah is a wonderful designer and a fantastic person to work with! We needed help furnishing our new house and Sarah helped us immensely with great ideas & designs that really fit the spaces. I appreciate that Sarah has great taste, but was conscious of cost and recommended which items were worth splurging on and where we could save money with lower-cost (but still quality) items so that we could stay on a budget. We wanted to be very involved in the process, and she made that easy. Sarah really listened to what we wanted and how we wanted to live in the spaces and worked with us with recommendations. She helped us understand her thinking and her experience with spaces and pulled together ideas for rooms that play well off each other, have the playful elements we were looking for and now that we have been living with them for several months, are incredibly functional. And she did put her foot down when needed to keep us from making expensive mistakes. Sarah was also flexible to accommodate our schedules and always in touch, without pestering, to push the process along and keep us informed on status. I would recommend Sarah highly to anyone looking for a designer with a clean, modern, functional and beautiful look.
