I gave Convalescent Blood yesterday

I decided that something good should come out of me having Covid-19 and I knew there was a need for this type of blood donation. I signed up on-line last week and had to ask some questions about the details of my positive test. Then a few daysi later the Red Cross called me for an appt., which was yesterday afternoon. I got there and barely met the temperature guidelines with a 99.5 with just getting out of my car on a 95 degree day. I was asked all the regular questions for a blood donation. When that was all done I got both of my arms poked and I laid there for about 45 minutes while they took platelets out. My platelets should be in someone with a weak immune system in 3 days.

I can donate every 28 days. I haven't decided if I will do it again, I probably will. I didn't feel bad or have any bad reaction to the procedure.

Oh Sherry---I got chills reading your post---what a wonderful day for you and your garden---I'm way beyond thrilled for you--- and what a great DH you have --- dinner sounds delicious How nice to read you have Blue Willow----I have a wonderful collection of really old Blue willow that was given to me by my favorite aunt who was 93 when we lost her---she always set the table with her dishes when we had lunch and then one day shortly before she died she had them all packed up for me to take home------I treasure them I also have a set that we picked up when they had a special at the Acme food stores---we use it everyday because it is very practical and pretty--Microwave safe etc. Your post made me happy tonight. I totally get your excitement. I have a few citrus trees started from seeds years ago - lemon, key lime, grapefruit, and satsuma orange - some of which are pushing 4 feet tall but none have flowered... yet. I'm sure when they do I'll be gushing on here just like you. Congrats! Make sure squirrels stay the hell away from them - they will pull every little fruit off they can when they are small. It seems like once they are golf-ball sized squirrels then leave them alone. I have lost entire treefulls of lemons, oranges and grapefruit to the stinkin' squirrels.

Hi Pranjal...I've been going thru a similar situation with my 8yr old cat Odessa (see above). She had been on Flagyl for 6 weeks (as per vets instruction)and as of 2 weeks ago, I gradually started decreasing the dose. I also put her on a soil pased pro-biotic called Pet Flora (I wrote about it under another subject). All was going fine for about 12 days...then O had 2 major cow-pies in 24 hours. I took her into the vet again. I asked him about pseudomembranous colitis and/or Tritrichomonas foetus being the problem. He said the T.F. was more likely since she had ben a shelter cat, but since she had been completely off Flagyl for less then 10 days he said he had to wait another week to manually extract a sterile stool sample in order to make the diagnois. I think Odessa heard him say that (literally scared the s---out of her)because this morning I found a perfectly formed, non smelly poop in her box! I had asked the vet about the soil based pro-biotic and he said to keep her on it...it couldn't hurt and could only help. If Odessa keeps up the good work, I'm going to cancel the appointment I made for the stool extraction. Do ask your vet about the possibly of Tritrichomonas foetus. I called the ASPCA and they told me that they don't test for it because it is not considered treatable.The bad news is that it is resistant to most anti-biotic treatment. The good news is that given time, it tends to resolve itself spontaneously. Google it and you will find a lot of good info...seems to fit Jas-purrs symptoms to a t. There is recently an antibiotic that seems to kill it off, but my vet said that that should only be given as a last resort as it has a possibility of being toxic. Please keep me posted on Jas-purr.

Checking a complete blood count, including the differential, will help the vet decide what the stuff in the lungs is. For example, fungal infections may show up with more monocytes, bacterial infections with more neutrophils, parasitic infections with more eosinophils. Antibiotics won't do anything for fungal or parasitic infections. Another thing that could be useful information is if the dog has a low WBC count, because that means the infection is overwhelming his body's ability to fight it. Or that he has some kind of other immunocompromised condition. If that is the case then the pup probably needs more than just antibiotics. A plain kennel cough infection would have resolved on its own by now, so there is definately something else going on.

I had Covid-19 back in June. It was a very light case and my two daughters , niece and nephew also had it. I guess I should have said when I had it in case you didn't see my post back in June.

Bless you! that is an especially important, life-saving gift in your circumstance. Only you can decide if you will do it again, and if so, how often. My dad regularly donated platelets years ago. The red cross office was convenient to his workplace, and his supervisor gave him a few minutes extra on his lunch hour.

If they took the platelets, you got took. It is the plasma they need for convalescent covid use.

Well I guess I said the wrong thing and they did take Convalescent Plasma like it’s called, not platelets.

I'm sorry, I started the confusion! Here's the Red Cross info on their 4 types of blood donations. (Whole red, Power red, Platelets, and Plasma). I equated plasma to platelets and they are not the same thing! Learn from my carelessness.....

I have read that people with some types of blood (A) are more likely to catch Covid19 than others. One doctor said the hospital cases are more males than females. Interesting. I wonder why.

Glad to know you are over it and it's wonderful you are able to donate convalescent plasma.

I donate blood regularly and so far the antibody test has come back negative every time. I went yesterday to donate again and they asked if I could give plasma instead given i have a rarish blood type so I did. It took two plus hours and was a little weird but no problem really.

The only surprising thing was once I got home I was utterly exhausted and despite drinking tons of water and eating a balanced meal I had to spend the rest of the day resting. My blood pressure was super low. every time I got up to try and do anything I got light headed and my heart rate went way up, like over 130 to 144 at one point. Normal is 60` s.

I think I'll stick to just donating blood from now on, I was really surprised that it had this effect, wonder if it's age related or just me?
