Rose Petals Nursery came to my house yesterday

Well, not the whole nursery - just Sally. She wanted some cuttings of Climbing Maman Cochet, a rose they did not have, and she got a ton of them. Keep your fingers crossed that lots of them take. She also got some from Le Vesuve, Purezza, LaSylphide, Princesse de Nassau and Serratipetala. (Jeri, glad to hear you finally got one for yourself.) I hadn't ever thought of it before, but it's kind of like donating blood. It's a good way to keep the OGR population growing and circulating.

We had dinner together afterwards that DH had cooked - a one-pot pasta dish. He calls it American Chop Suey! I was so thrilled when we came in and the table was set with my Blue Willow china. He's such a sweetie, and it was delicious. I learned the proper way to take cuttings, and Sally generously gave me a 'Leonie Lamesch' that I'd been wanting. Though we both sweated quite a lot in the late afternoon sun, it was a pretty wonderful evening.

Sherry, that has to make you feel proud that a rose nursery wants cuttings of your plants. I'm impressed. You've come such a long way gardening-wise in such a short time. Your choice of roses is really great too, or maybe it's just that we have the same taste. At any rate, good for you!

How nice to see a post from you, PM - even if it was inadvertent, LOL.... that was surely an odd nursery - but I find just like catalogs of plants, photos can be deceiving and nursery websites equally so. If you think about it, even shopping for a new house online -- photos are meant to be the very best presentation of what exists -- with plant photos one seldom sees the full plant and you're lucky if you see foliage - it's often just the flower (which could in reality be 1/2" size, LOL)....and we won't talk about reality of color for plant photos... what a huge disparity! I recall stopping at a NE nursery years ago whose website I loved and had ordered mail order from - but I was shocked to find out how truly tiny the place was upon visiting it - and I drove about 2 hours out of my original destination to check it out - you just never know..... Thanks for the best wishes re the pup - I will miss my Chloe forever, but hope to have a new character in the house and to share in August sometime. Sherry, how neat! I'm happy they're behaving for you. I'd registered a golden sport of Julia's Rose many years ago. A rose friend from San Diego, named Julia, had to have it and signed her letter, "The REAL Golden Julia". She has two rather beautiful daughters. The 'dreaded little sister" had her rose, Kathleen. The elder daughter wanted one and since mom is a charter member (along with me) of the HOM, Hooked on Mauves, I offered her my purple poly seedling to test. She and her daughter loved the rose. The daughter's name? Why, the same as my middle name, Lauren. So, both beautiful young ladies have "their" roses. My family name Lauren/Laurie/Lawrence is represented and the lovely seedling has a life! Thank you! Kim

trends and fashions, mariannese. At the moment, everything here is 'grow your own' with a sideshow of tropicals, prairie planting and ornamental grasses. A quick look in any bookstore will illuminate where the money is going in gardening - design is god. Not only nurseries, the horticultural trade as a whole is going through one of those reinvention moments. many colleges have downsized, teaching fewer modules in plant husbandry, nursey stock, even basic gardening, in favour of quick, money-spinning design courses. Everyone wants to be a bloody designer (We are....and we have seen some absolute cowboys who know NOTHING about plants). There are less apprenticeships. less facillities and many councils, parks and colleges no longer grow their own plants - they merely buy them in cheaply, two or three times a year, from massive greenhouses in the Netherlands. Therefore, the perceived need for knowledge and experience is receding while the nursey trade is vastly over-capitalised - almost impossible to get a small start-up going now. In the UK, the rose trade has largely been fairly steady although Beales, our foremost old rose grower, was in financial difficulties last year and have been forced to look at new ways to generate revenue (teaching courses, expanding the product range, taking on franchises selling garden structures and so on). However, I cannot help but feel quite optimistic for the longer term since roses have been around for hundreds of years while the same cannot be said about restios, bananas, echinacea and miscanthus and the rest of the fashionable plants. Moreover, in a time of anxiety and fear, people invariably fall back into nostalgia and conservative thinking....and there is nothing so redolent of english gardening as a rose. Individuals, sadly, will fall by the wayside and it may be that, for a time, we are dependent on amateurs and a few larger firms to supply us. However, these plants are out there - they are not going away and if the gardening world seriously addressed the issue of failing sales, they would be forced to engage in some imaginative thinking and address some of the many issues which troublwe people who would grow roses if they did not use so much water, pesticides and fertilisers...a matter of education and breaking down artificial barriers to full understanding. Not only that, breeders are also keen to address these troubling problems such as health and vigour, the way roses are planted within a larger scheme and the general good value of planting long-flowering shrubs - we will see a lot more ground-covering/landscape roses which, to my mind, will be a good thing as I am heartily sick of hebes and lonicera, aucuba and bloody skimmia - our usual municipal plantings. The rose industry is not dead or even slightly ill - it is just changing...and a good thing too.

However: only rats on HFHS (fat plus sugar) diet developed hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance and a diminished insulin response to a glucose load. " When I'm busy, I gulped one glass of juice for energy (100% juice with natural sugar) .. that kept my blood-sugar stabilized to finish a task for 1 hour longer. And a glass of soy milk (7 g. protein) & brewer's yeast & honey lasts me 4 hours without eating. Recently I did something different: finish the last bar of Klondite ice-cream (230 calories, 14 g of fat, 20 g white sugar) & sweet & greasy. Right after that, my blood sugar crashed, I was unbearably hungry and had to eat a meal immediately. I checked the ingredients: it has sugar & corn syrup (high fructose corn syrup). A little of fat plus protein is useful to keep one full. But fat plus sugar induce more hunger. I tested blueberry-smoothie made with 0% fat Greek yogurt versus 2% fat yogurt, and the 2% fat yogurt is more filling & last longer. CONCLUSION: Fat & protein & veggies is a good combo. Fat is needed to absorb the nutrients in veggies better. We have a friend who's a vegetarian and he ALWAYS USE full-fat salad-dressing, plus full-fat cheese on his salads, and he's just as skinny as husband in their late 50's. I used coconut oil to make banana muffin, and olive oil in my cooking. Here's what the Dean of Nutrition, Harvard Medical School said about coconut oil: http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/coconut-oil "Coconut oil is about 90% saturated fat, which is a higher percentage than butter (about 64% saturated fat), beef fat (40%), or even lard (also 40%). Too much saturated fat in the diet is unhealthy because it raises "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of heart disease. So it would seem that coconut oil would be bad news for our hearts. But what's interesting about coconut oil is that it also gives "good" HDL cholesterol a boost. But, for now, I'd use coconut oil sparingly. Most of the research so far has consisted of short-term studies to examine its effect on cholesterol levels. We don't really know how coconut oil affects heart disease. And I don't think coconut oil is as healthful as vegetable oils like olive oil and soybean oil, which are mainly unsaturated fat and therefore both lower LDL and increase HDL. Coconut oil's special HDL-boosting effect may make it "less bad" than the high saturated fat content would indicate, but it's still probably not the best choice among the many available oils to reduce the risk of heart disease. — Walter C. It's less tasty than NOW brand (sold out at local health food store). Solgar BY has a "plastic" & artificial taste to it, and less acidic than NOW. So I'll use Solgar BY for my roses, and still need to buy NOW brewer's yeast when they stock up.

buford, it really is great to have this marvelous nursery so close by. I have no more room for incoming roses, but I can contribute with outgoing roses.

Ingrid, as I told Sally, when I was buying roses, I got one of everything - or so it seemed, and this rose, Climbing Maman Cochet, is just special. I think everyone with heat should give her a try. So Big Mama is now REALLY gonna be a mama to many other rose plants. Pretty cool.

Jeri, I knew I'd get your approval on this. A no-brainer, right?

Sherry, That sounds like a lot of fun. Sally was very nice to me via email earlier this year when I placed an order (actually really wanted something they said was "out of stock"). I think I'd enjoy meeting both Sally and Linda in person.

I'm glad that you, like me, have a spouse that supports your gardening interest. Thanks for sharing your garden with us here and with others via giving cuttings.

How nice to read you have Blue Willow----I have a wonderful collection of really old Blue willow that was given to me by my favorite aunt who was 93 when we lost her---she always set the table with her dishes when we had lunch and then one day shortly before she died she had them all packed up for me to take home------I treasure them

I also have a set that we picked up when they had a special at the Acme food stores---we use it everyday because it is very practical and pretty--Microwave safe etc.

gardenatlanta, when you consider that both Linda and Sally have "regular" jobs, it is really amazing how hard they work and what a good job they do with their roses. We're all blessed to have a small nursery like this.

Melissa, it's nice to have roses old enough to take cuttings from.

Sherry---Love your china----Blue and white china has always held a special place in my heart---
I live near the Original Lenox mfc, plant in Trenton N.J--my first DH grandfather worked there many. many years ago so I do have a lot of Lenox--many different patterns which I love to use but the old blue steals my heart every time.
the piece on the right in your picture looks like some old "Flow blue" my mother had a lot of that but it was stolen from her home.
I know I would feel right at home in your garden and home.
