Checkerboard floor for a vintage kitchen?
Comments (49)mary_lu, thank you for remembering me :). I still haven't made a decision, although I found an ad for a Restore a few hours' drive from here, that has many different colors of VCT for a bargain price. I'm planning a trip soon, if only to see the colors in person. In the meantime I'm doing small tasks, here and there, on the guest room (above the new addition) and the dining room. Today, one of my daughters is helping me move a pie safe (or two) from the DR to my bedroom. When I get some pics of those areas, I'll start another thread. Thanks, everyone, for all the advice and good thoughts!...See MoreFinished my checkerboard floor, but ...
Comments (32)Oh, that is great. My favorite season is spring, mud, cold, rain, and all! I see a blue jay flying around and I want to believe it is "Jimmy Jay". A blue jay that my 21 year old son nursed along through his fledgling period last summer. We have a brooder house and used that for a small aviary when he got too big for the hamster cage. He would sit on our hands as we fed him pureed dried cat food through a syringe. I believe it is against the law to care for Jays, but we just couldn't let the barn cats get him :). One day we left the door open and he flew out to the apple tree, then he went back inside. The next day we left the door open and never saw him again. I'd call for him, just for fun. Now when I see the bright blue jay I want to believe it is Jimmy Jay....See Morebordering carpet/rug with wood flooring- bad idea?
Comments (8)We can't afford to do wood and then a big rug too. Simply put - then don't get a rug! Eventually you'll have the money for one, or something just as functional, or you'll decide you don't need it afterall, and I think that the 20/20 hindsight we're all cursed with will make you wish you'd gone rugless for a while in favor of the full wood floor. There's nothing saying wood floors must be covered. If you truly need a rug for some reason, there are economical alternatives such as buying second-hand or heck, even a floorcloth or just a bound piece of carpet. With what you're describing, I'm guessing you'll eventually run into a few snags... What happens once your carpet pad & carpet compress, and you have a noticeable height differential? Tripping hazard? Wobbly furniture? Unintentional sunken living room? :) If you ever want full hardwood (with that lovely 20/20 hindsight) it will be difficult to match the existing wood, and you could end up with an obvious perimeter (either in finish difference, or boards if you don't cut into existing flooring, etc.) With a rug, or no rug, you're free to change your furniture layout. I'd think a "permanent rug" like you're descrbing will lock your room layout down a lot more, and more permanently. I don't know if this is a valid concern or not, but with no real transition, I wonder what happens if you spill on the carpet perimeter, or need to shampoo your carpet next to the hardwood... is there anything there to act as a barrier and keep the water from penetrating the unfinished parts of the wood? Just some thoughts, hope they help. :)...See MoreA bit OT: checkerboard floor
Comments (28)My foyer floor hasn't been installed yet, but i'll be using Marble in Creama Marfil and Black Absolute in 18" x18" tiles. Since it will butt up to a dark wood floor the Creama tiles will be cut in half and used as a border. Inside of that will be a 12" Black Absolute cut in half. Inside the borders, the remaining tiles will be placed on the diagonal. I wanted to make a statement with the tile, and the borders will really give it the extra oomph. I originally was going to use white, but decided scuff marks might be a problem. With the vein in the Creama, they might not be *quite* as obvious. ;o)...See MoreJilly
