16 Ways to Check In to Checkered Patterns
Take the Pattern Up High, Down Low, and Everywhere In Between
If you think checkered patterns are old school, think again. Whether black and white or done in colors, traditional or contemporary, country-esque or urban stylish, this pattern can actually infuse spaces with quite the chic charm. Plus, there are lots of ways to sneak it into your decor; you can really checker-it-up with wall-to-wall flooring, or simply pepper it in with a few accessories. Whatever your heart’s desire, these photos will surely have you itching for a checkered lifestyle.
1. Flooring Need I say more with this picture? (Am I the only one drooling?) The oversize checkered pattern finished in high-gloss is apt to take your breath away. Pair it with a red sofa and boom: This living room is spiced with sophisticated drama.
3. Buffet chest This incredible sculptural horse is rightfully stealing the show in this picture. But once you stop ogling its life-size presence, check out these fabulous checkered buffet chests. They are too good to be true. This space’s sense of whimsy mixed in with the traditional is just what every room needs.
4. Family room chairs Get your gingham going on! This classic print is so fresh and comfortable, it’s nearly impossible to get it wrong.
5. Backsplash Wondering what to do with your kitchen backsplash? Try a checkered pattern! Mix it up by layering a diagonal pattern on top of the original to make it more interesting and textural.
6. Throw pillows Whenever you’re trying to figure out how to add a dose of pattern or color, throw pillows are always a viable solution. These add a great spunk to this uber-contemporary setting.
8. Upright chair Single upright chairs are great accessories to throw in a hallway, and I love how this one is finished with the black and white checkers and high gloss paint. It’s a classic mimic of the playful room to its left.
9. Bathtub tiling If this isn’t a little sanctuary of heaven then I’m not sure what is. A variety of tiling options would have finished the surround of this tub off beautifully, but the checkered pattern sets off the tub itself in such a classic fashion. Peel your eyes away from the decor for a second to check out the view — amazing!
10. Light fixture How cute are these? These checkered light fixtures add a playful punch to this setting.

13. Bookshelf Decor enthusiasts, shelving units need not be boring! Add a little interest by blocking off sections in a checkered pattern like this example. You could even convert the blocked off parts to drawers to create extra storage.

14. Rug If tiling an entire floor in checkers seems too big of a commitment, try an area rug. The bits of yellow in this one are just the right pop of color against the gray and black furniture.
15. Kitchen countertop There are too many things I love about this island, and the checkered finish is only the beginning. Everyone tends to hang out in the kitchen, and utilizing an island as an actual seating space allows you to use it for both meal preparation and actually eating the meal. Besides, with everyone congregating in the kitchen, you might be able to sucker someone into chopping the onions.
16. Life-size chess board Why not!!?!?
