David Austins for Hot Humid Gulf Coast
Comments (1)I suggest you talk to Chamblee's, they will know which ones will do well in your environment. They told me Sharifa Asma is a good one for the Gulf Coast, the man I talked to really likes it. You'll get suggestions here, too. I know there are some people along the Gulf Coast growing them. I have had Tradescant for years, and it has never gotten very large, but blooms regularly. I've also been growing Golden Celebration, but it has a lot of blackspot and doesn't bloom as much as I'd like. I like Pat Austin, but have been told it won't do well here, it hates the heat. Comments (10)Thank you, Lance and Andrea, for your input and advice. I put a call into DA (after hours there), so I will call again tomorrow. I agree that these did not arrive looking like grade 1 (grade A?) roses. Andrea, your comments about too wet were something I checked for after I read your post because we have had a great deal of rain here, and I have clay soil. (I did create this bed last year "lasagna style," so it is draining well, but when I dug the holes, I did get down into the clay.) However, there is no sulphur smell, and it is suggested for my zone to bury the bud union 3-4" for winter protection. (We usually have two or three weeks with -10, -20 F, and I credit burying the bud union for the survival of my Heritage and Tradescant, as well as Honor and Melody Perfume for 6+ years.) I will keep calling DA. I really would like these roses, and they were listed as "very hardy," so I thought they would have a good chance in my zone. I have enjoyed my two Austins so much, and I was looking forward to the color of Emma and Charles Mackintosh's ability to complement other colors in the garden, especially because I designed this bed, in part, with these roses in mind. I guess I will have to wait another year (at least) for these roses. Onward! Thank you for your help! cheers, Nora...See MoreInfo on Some of the Lesser Known Austins??? -LONG-
Comments (45)WOW!! Thanks a bunch Celeste. Those are the best pics I have ever seen of Mayor of Casterbridge to date.....The blooms are amazing.....a very strongly supported cup with tufts of exterior petals outside the cup and moderately and artistically packed interior petals. The contrasting button eye fits it well. My one question about MOC was whether or not the blooms were large enough, but going from the proportion of the blooms in comparison to your hand, they look HUGE. How large would you say MOC's blooms are? I have only heard a few vague reports that they were small, although like yourself, I have heard so little about Mayor of Casterbridge. I was only going to get 1 pink.....but now I have to kill one of the children and choose between Pretty Jessica, Mayor of Casterbridge, and the other pinks. I have a feeling I might end up getting 2 of the pinks....which would still make the decision terribly difficult. After 3 days of viewing and researching, I have only decided on a white in winchester cathedral. :) I'm still looking over yellows at the moment and my top 2 so far are Golden Celebration and Charlotte, although I would have probably chosen Charles Darwin as it has big cup shaped blooms, but it doesn't look as if Roses Unlimited carries him. That is going to be a toughy decision there. Happy Child is still a possibility as well, although it's a little more lemony color rather than a yellow that I am leaning more towards at the moment. Grace is a unique Austin. The bloom form is unique from the others. I havn't looked at the apricots much yet, so it's hard saying off hand which ones I am seriously considering. I know I saw Carding Mill and really enjoyed it's appearance or substituting it for an orange blend like Lady Emma Hamilton.....or going off the wall and choosing The Alnwick Rose...although I've heard the blooms are quite small. Still have a lot of research to do on Apricots, Oranges, and Alnwick itself. I still have to choose on one of the "reds" too yet. :) At least I have Evelyn and Winchester Cathedral down though....assuming they still have them in stock....See MoreDoes anyone grow Charles Rennie Mackintosh (DA)
Comments (5)Hi Pam - my Charles Rennie only went in last winter and has had a tough year, what with the drought and earthworks going on around the house. Charles Rennie is still only about 40 cm high, has languished all year and has managed, maybe, half a dozen unimpressive blooms in total. BUT...I have seen him in a NZ south island garden well over 2 metres tall and carrying a very respectable amount of big lilac bloom in April. So don't rely on my experience. I just love the colour and the shape of the blooms. Can't help you on the rest of your list as I only have Sharifa and Jude. Both seem quite happy with full summer sun in the NSW Blue Mountains....See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
