Does anyone grow Charles Rennie Mackintosh (DA)

I went doswn to Treloars today and I couldnt resist buying Charles Rennie Mackintosh a DA although I have never heard of it before. It seems too good to be true with a beautiful cupped shape and great colour. Im just wondering if anyone grows it and if you have any advice for me. Also I bought Sharifa Asma Evelyn Brother Cadfael and Jude the Obscure. I have one spot left that will be shelterd from the hottest of the afternoon sun (while still getting 6 hours of sun per day) I would be grateful if someone could tell me which of the 5 would most benefit from a bit of shelter thanks pam

Hi Pam - my Charles Rennie only went in last winter and has had a tough year, what with the drought and earthworks going on around the house.
Charles Rennie is still only about 40 cm high, has languished all year and has managed, maybe, half a dozen unimpressive blooms in total. BUT...I have seen him in a NZ south island garden well over 2 metres tall and carrying a very respectable amount of big lilac bloom in April. So don't rely on my experience. I just love the colour and the shape of the blooms. Can't help you on the rest of your list as I only have Sharifa and Jude. Both seem quite happy with full summer sun in the NSW Blue Mountains.

Hi meryl2 Thanks for the reply Does charles rennie smell good? Also the pictures I have seen of him show him a similar shape to jude, is this so. Actually sharifa was the one I was thinking would need a bit of shelter so it is good that yours is happy with full summer sun.

Hi Alana, a few years ago I got 'Charles Rennie Mackintosh' own roots from Heirloom Roses and I am growing it in a container ever since (it will go into the ground eventually though ;-)!). I have to say I love this rose! Not only for the a little unusual pink-lilac color of the blooms, but also for the very cupped full flower shape. To me this is an especially charming rose, that I would recommend to everyone to at least try out. Growing in a pot mine didn't show any signs of being chlorotic so far. Since images always say more than thousand words, I put in a link to one of my blog posts, where I published some photos of this rose. *** and their roses should rightly (by your logic) be termed 'English Roses'. *** Not mine, Lozza. I've just said, even if we go after that logic (the place of origin), it woudn't be incorrect to conclude why David Austin calls his roses English roses. Other growers, like Kordes and Harkness, were happy to call their roses by their own names. They've put their names before their country, because that's what they think is more important, maybe. Isn't that a little self-ish on their side if David was self-ingratiating? Plus, they weren't doing the same thing as DA did -- they were happy breeding something else, not introducing something completely new. But sincerely, I don't give a damn how they want to call their roses -- I call them as they suggest me. Kordes wants 'Kordes roses'? It's ok with me. If he wanted 'German roses', I'd be happy with that too. But let us be polite and say: o tempora, o mores. This discussion goes nowhere, because word 'English' is too strong a word for a today's rose marketing. Let me paraphrase Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, when he was asked why Apple puts on all their products 'Designed by Apple in California'. Was he separatist, not loyal to his own country (USA)? He said something like this: "It happened that we just like where we are -- we just like California." Will Sun Corp. be unhappy, because they're in California too and make computers too? Huntington Rose vs. Charles Rennie Mackintosh

In its third year in my garden, Huntington Rose is not like any other rose I have, in foliage and growth habit. It is not like a modern rose at all, but more like an old rose, or even a bramble. Flowers are quite small, less than 2" in diameter, which was a big surprise. They do not last at all in the heat, not much more than 1 day. At the beginning of the season, the flowers smelled like banana cream pie, rather unusual, but as the season has gone on, the fragrance is just a light rose fragrance. Although all this may not sound very attractive, I find it to be quite a charming rose. I haven't grown CRM. Foliage has seven leaflets. Flowers in sprays, although all the buds do not open at once. So far, growing more like a climber, or vine, with long and multiple basals. Look at all that growth. This is not usual for roses in my garden, and in the first two years there was hardly any growth at all. Flowers get crispy quickly in the heat. Early in the season. Not a good photo, but you get the idea. Weak necks, small flowers. Does not look like a modern rose to me. I wonder if this rose performs very differently in different climates. I'm keeping it, for now, to see how it does as time goes on.

Huh.... I'll add it to my 'short list' of possible Austins to get. Seems SOOO odd that the Austin people themselves have no clue what will grow where and in what zone. You all are a better resource seemingly! Thank you.

I thought about it, being a Glaswegian-he is famous for his architecture there- but I thiink the catalogue said it was a thorny one. So I left it this year as I have one very thorny one already.

Yep, Charles Rennie smells lovely and has that cup-shape Jude has. Don't know where you are located (nothing on your page) but during the day in summer it can be very hot in Katoomba, so although Sharifa may look delicate she laps up the sun.

Thanks meryl2 I cant wait to see charles rennie in bloom now and I will plant him close to Jude, I have become very enthusiastic about cupped shape roses and have been investigating the bourbans. I have just ordered La Reine Victoria which I hope will look well with the others. I am in the outer eastern suburbs of Melb so the summer can be very hot. Good to know that sharifa can take that. I cant wait for spring and its only 15 days into winter!! thanks pam
