Hi from a new member
Comments (23)Hi Barb, I think your choices are perfect! H. heuschkeliana is one of my earliest favorites and I still think everyone should have both pink and yellow varieties because they smell so good and bloom so often and are so easy to care for. If we were picking plants to become a living carpet and take over, it would be right up there on my list. I haven't had Mathilde that long - I really put off obtaining it forever for some reason. But it is so cute that I feel stupid now. Grows super fast too. H. lacunosa is another one where I just... want to collect them all. Very different from one another and universally well behaved. My favorite for the longest time was Sno Caps, but I'm really liking these hard green succulent ones like the Thai Clone and Langkawai recently. My Royal Flush is finally starting to be really colorful all the time. If you're checking the archives, you should do some searches for lacunosas (Whenever I write that name, I hear Hermione Granger saying "lacu-nooooo-sah" (nee leviosa) in my head) because there are some AMAZING photos from members of their giant plants. I created a thread on how to post photos a while back. I kind of want to do a new one that's a bit clearer, but for now it works well enough. (Here it is)....See MoreNeed Curb Appeal help from all of you creative members.
Comments (10)Circus: We are sill tweaking the floor plan, but here is what we have now. Essentially, we want kitchen/living room to take advantage of rear view. As for the lot/landscaping. There is a gentle left to right slope but the front to rear slope is drastic. We can't do a side load garage due to the lot size (and slope). There won't be any landscaping to speak of other than in the direct front of the house. The house will only sit about 20 ft off of a small lane/street. Lots of windows on back, but not many needed on the front side. I love that house photo from the movie, but need help making it still look cottage-like with a one story. Your bungalow is cool. Love it. Seems hard to keep the cottage look when needing low and wide rather than tall and narrow....See MoreNew member looking for kitchen layout help
Comments (12)Again I appreciate all help and suggestions. I just drew two layouts that use the stair wall They are basically the same one but moving around appliances. In the first one leaves the refrigerator where it has been and the wall ovens but moves the cooktop on the stair wall and allow me to try to use the existing pantry with the pullout drawer slides I bought. Looking at that design in 3d it looks like it would appear more opened up if the refrigerator was moved along one of the other walls. It doesn't really fit at the end of the L without being too close to the corner or the stairway. I seen what you meant about having more usable space on the stairway wall if I didn't turn the corner, but to me it seems that I am losing cabinet space and countertop space by going with the Galley style but I just seen your suggestion about it eliminating the need for corner storage and having more usable space on other wall. It also looks more closed in on the drawing perhaps because the tall wide pantry and refrigerator near the front blocking view between dining room and kitchen. That is why I tried to incorporate your idea of putting 1 of the major appliances on the stair wall but also keeping the L shape in the back corner. I also think a L shape looks better than a galley style but need to consider it a little more. As far as punching a hole in the back of the closet... we were thinking that if there was no way we could use it in the kitchen then we would/will open it up into the closet. The only problem is that is a lot of kitchen storage we would be losing in the kitchen. As far as the heat, they are hot water baseboards which is why I was unsure how involved it would be to change them to toekicks. I am not as familiar working with plumbing as I am with other aspects that would be involved in the kitchen remodel. Here are my two designs (like I said they are basically the same) Let me know what you all think and I need to look harder at a galley style to see whether that is the direction we want to go....See MoreKitchen Layout Back from Designer - Advice
Comments (30)If you hang around for much time, you'll soon find that most of here put function over form. Sure, it's pretty but does it function well? That is the acid test for us. You and your wife should imagine making a meal in the proposed kitchen plan, entertaining company, cleaning up afterwards, etc. How do you think your plan works and what needs to be addressed? Don't forget to consider storage needs. Does a plan offer the appropriate amount of storage where you need it? IMO, your proposed plan might be lacking in this respect. Where will you store you dishes, glassware and silverware? On the same wall of cabs as your cook top? If so, then where will you store your pots, pans, prep utensils, etc? Sure you have plenty of storage but if it's not handy to where you need it, it's not well planned. That is how we suggest you assess any plan that comes your way. Did you read the "New to kitchens" thread that I linked to above? There are some very good tips on what to consider when you plan a kitchen. You're about to spend a good chunk of money on your home. It will serve you well to make sure you're spending it wisely....See MoreElmer J Fudd
