Got my design back from KD, advice sought please
Comments (9)Thanks for the feedback, Chicagoans: I added dimensions and layout and more info below. Sweeby: The island will primarily be used for kids (in K and 1st now, so a long time to go with a heavily used kitchen I hope!) homework, projects, Breakfast, Lunch and maybe some dinners. I want to keep the island all one level with no appliances etc so we can spread out.. The little drawers on the island would be for the kids to store their papers etc. I wanted them on the outside of the kitchen work areas... The other side of the island is a walkway and then panty space. More info: We will have a dining table along the back of the peninsula. I added approx distances and more info. I also posted an older house layout, although only look to it for general layout. The bathroom will be set back a foot (smaller shower), so we will gain space in the kitchen in front of the cabinet pantry area and the peninsula has been moved in to make the kitchen a bit smaller and room for the bench and dining table in the family room area... I'd be glad to give more details if needed. Dianeloise:I am trying to enjoy the process! Maybe this will teach me to have more patience!...See MoreKitchen layout - Finally!! Looking for design advice.
Comments (11)We are a couple of empty nesters with kids far away. We frequently entertain with small groups of less than ten. Family is small, so even holidays do not bring a big crowd. Working in the kitchen - one of us is the prep cook, moving between fridge and sink area, then to countertop next to sink for chopping. The other is the cook, moving between the chopped food and the stove. We could most days of the week and every weekend. Our friends do not work in the kitchen, but like to hang out close by. We expect them to hang out in the new sunroom adjacent and open to the kitchen. Layout - water and gas can be moved fairly easily. Moving the sewer could be done, but would be a major headache. We cannot move the walls, windows or doors. Tiny walk-in pantry at far end. Appliances - 48" stove and hood, French door fridge set into alcove to appear as counter depth, standard DW, 30" apron sink, MW behind cabinet door. Goal - we've lived with chaos so long, simply having a real kitchen again is my goal. Definitely going with function as the main driver. Want to minimize the clutter left on the countertops. Other - would like to hide the coffee pot, but can't figure out a space that is close to the fridge and the sink to do so. (Heavy coffee drinker wants a spot of cream in his coffee.)...See MoreKitchen Layout Advice - Double oven, cooktop & symmetrical design
Comments (9)Your design has all 3 primary work zones crammed into one small space with a lot of wasted (and expensive) counterspace along the wall. [Primary work zones: Prep, Cooking, Cleanup] It makes it difficult for more than one person to work in the Kitchen Creates a bottleneck around the cooktop b/c everything is crammed into that area. This is the area that should be the most protected from traffic, not the area with the most traffic That bottleneck also is an issue when someone is trying to go from the cooktop to the sink for draining boiling water, etc. -- tripping over/dodging others in the aisle b/c everything is on that aisle. . If it were me, I'd: Move the sink and DW to the perimeter Put a prep sink in the island Have dish storage on the wall around the sink & DW . Now, You can have someone cleaning up/loading the DW or unloading the DW while someone else is preparing a meal (prepping and/or cooking) Dish storage is right next to the DW. This means that someone can be unloading the DW or setting the table while someone else is preparing a meal. . Something like this: Note: Since all or the key measurements are missing, I had to estimate the overall dimensions and island size. [Select/click on an image to see a larger version.] The MW sits in an alcove in the tall oven cabinet in the first layout. It's a single wall oven mounted at the correct height (vs neither quite right in double wall ovens or the bottom right and the top too high). I would include a pullout tray beneath the MW alcove and above the oven for convenient landing space. (See the "options" layout for double ovens and MW drawer instead of MW hanging from the cabinets (which is aesthetically less pleasing)). . Work Zone Map: . Comments (14)Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to add their suggestions/thoughts! My husband is taking an entirely hands off approach to this remodel so it's nice to have others weigh in with their expertise and advice since I have no background in home improvement! HU- 187528210- I definitely see your point about moving the fridge to the left to make a tighter work triangle but I do agree with chispa that moving it to that location might interfere with the doorway to the laundry/mudroom. decoenthusiaste- Thank you for the diagram! It helps to see the triangle with measurements included. I did try moving the range and ovens to where the refrigerator is in one iteration of the design but worried that if I kept it there, it would be an issue if the oven door was open when one of the kids was running from the mudroom into the living room (behind the north wall). I also thought it would be nice if the refrigerator could be more easily accessed from the dining and living areas. palimpsest- You're right, a couple extra steps beyond what is recommended hopefully won't make too much of a difference! And as I said to decoenthusiaste above, you totally called it on the limitations of the range and ovens being relocated to the wall where the fridge is! kevin9408- now you've got me feeling insecure about my "kitchen desert!" lol Early on I had considered doing an island but, like I mentioned in my original post, I decided that keeping my kids on the perimeter of the kitchen while I cook might be preferable to having them in the kitchen while I cook. I've also seen so many gorgeous kitchens with islands but always think, "man, what a pain to have to walk all the way around that island every time you need to get something out of the fridge." Maybe there's an island solution to both of those problems that i haven't thought of but so far I haven't been able to make it work in my space :( Perhaps a mini island in the middle? Like a lone palm tree on my desert :) H202- Thanks for keeping it real. You are also right, it is so easy to get caught up in these details during the design process that become complete non-issues once the job is complete! I probably won't even notice the extra few steps to the fridge! But I gotta say, now I don't know if all of the wasted space in the center of the kitchen that kevin9408 pointed out will be something that looks particularly odd and bothers me when it's done. Will try to keep your wise words in mind though and move on:)...See Moredan1888
