Symmetrical kitchen layout
Comments (46)Our architect will be doing us a favor by making plans at a reduced cost because he has a relationship with my husband's fire department. So I don't expect him to spend hours and hours with me while I figure out what we need. Trying to do that before hand. I do get that a dysfunctional kitchen that's pretty isn't worth much. But I know an off centered sink will forever bug me, otherwise I'm very open to functional choices that may not be the ideal design choice. I don't feel like bumping the sink maybe 3 feet is worth that sacrifice for me. My current sink isn't centered in the kitchen window and it still drives me nuts (5 years in!). Although the offset sink with centered faucet is a good thought. I still think I'd rather center it over the few inches that gains me. My other problem precluding me from being able to adapt one of these plans so far 100 percent are microwave related. I don't want a drawer because I have little children who looooove buttons (and we plan to have more) and I feel like it should be close to the fridge because of how often I go between the two. I don't love the clean up sink in the island because of potentially displaying dirty dishes but I'm willing to do it if it functions better. The sink in front of the window is another great idea but I struggle with how much dish storage that limits me to near by. I can see value to the sink being on the non window wall but I would want deeper cabinets for face space (genius idea I wouldn't have thought of!), but I'm concerned about the cost of that forcing me to go totally custom. Two sinks is a new concept for me, not sure I'd love it... I have a small sinkless island now that I love so I'm not too worried about that. But my kitchen is smaller currently so everything is close and maybe that makes it function well still....See Moresymmetrical or asymmetrical, and other advice on kitchen.
Comments (34)I don't remember if fridge was Miele or Sub-zero. Have done both the same way. It was panel-ready and we incorporated a vertical aluminum channel(custom colored the match) so no visible handles were used. I really only use Fenix so can't speak to the other materials. It's all about getting quality edges to me so we only use the latest O-edge technology for the most seamless look. "repair with heat" yes to a point. The material is very durable but a really deep scratch can't be fixed like that. I don't know what all your options and quality of workmenship are there. When we do matte painted we use a very high quality moisture resistant form of MDF and we don't use lacquer we use 2K-poly from Italy....See MoreRange/Cooktop/Oven design HELP!
Comments (13)being that you & family are not huge cooks, consider a speed oven, which is smaller than a full size and put a full size oven below it. that's what we have for a family of 5 and it has worked out great, no regrets!! speed oven is also a microwave/broiler/roaster... etc. we have one and use it multiple times a day. it heats faster than the full size and most times we really don't need the full-size. its used more than the full-size. also, look into induction. safer, faster, easier to clean. and with kids that a huge plus in my book. i also like the cooktop b/c you put all your pots and pans underneath, so convenient. Cooktops are also great b/c you have no oven underneath, so no heat escape when cooking and i like having the ovens apart from the cooktop so others can help in the kitchen. or more bluntly, no one is your way while cooking. "excuse me, i need to check on my pizza in the oven" ugh! (hope that makes sense!) FWIW: we have a Miele speed oven, Wolf "E" series full size oven, Miele 36" induction cooktop and Miele DW....See MoreDOUBLE OVEN/COOKTOP DILEMMA
Comments (38)Most designs require some kind of compromise and you have to decide which things are most important to you and prioritize. Sometimes doing what is best for you goes against conventional design recommendations. Two 30” ovens was important to me, but didn’t have a great place for a stack. And I’ll be honest, I had a stack in my previous house and hated the top one because it was hard for me to reach across the door and into it (I’m 5’2”). I decided to go with 2 under the counter ovens in our new build. I considered the arrangement you showed with the cooktop directly centered over the 2 ovens, but was told the appliances we choose could not be installed in that configuration. So instead we have the ovens spaced out with the cooktop centered between them. We also went with ovens that are side opening rather than opening down. This way I’m not trying to reach across the door and into the lower oven. I saw one of these installed at below counter height and had absolutely no reservations about having to lift things up, and out of the ovens....See MoreBuehl
