What's on the other side of that island? It looks to me like it's butted up against an invisible wall... The clipped corners are expensive and not very useful for cabinets, and the little drawers on the seating side are probably too little to be much use -- so I'm with you on a rectangular island.

Even more -- How do you envision using that island? If it had a prep sink, it would be a great place to work. But as it is, the more natural prep area would be in the corner by the sink. Is a prep sink a possibility?

I think you will get some good advice if you add exact dimensions to the overhead plan and repost it, and also a sketch that shows what surrounds the kitchen so that people can see entry points and put it into context with the rest of the house. (For example, what is on the other side of the island; on the other side of the peninsula; behind the refrigerator wall.)

Also, people will ask about your family (kids?) and cooking habits - how many cooks, do you do alot of baking, etc.

How much distance between the island and the cabinet right of the stove? It looks like that might be a bottleneck. We tried to keep at least 42" aisle space around our island. Enjoy the process - it will probably take several revisions!

Sweeby: The island will primarily be used for kids (in K and 1st now, so a long time to go with a heavily used kitchen I hope!) homework, projects, Breakfast, Lunch and maybe some dinners. I want to keep the island all one level with no appliances etc so we can spread out.. The little drawers on the island would be for the kids to store their papers etc. I wanted them on the outside of the kitchen work areas... The other side of the island is a walkway and then panty space.
More info: We will have a dining table along the back of the peninsula.
I added approx distances and more info. I also posted an older house layout, although only look to it for general layout. The bathroom will be set back a foot (smaller shower), so we will gain space in the kitchen in front of the cabinet pantry area and the peninsula has been moved in to make the kitchen a bit smaller and room for the bench and dining table in the family room area... I'd be glad to give more details if needed.

From what I can see, your layout reminds me alot of this kitchen's layout. Can you lose the peninsula? Can you extend any further to the right? In 1 layout it looks like you can, in the other it looks like there's a clipped cabinet so I'm not really sure.

One thought on the dimensions around your island - be sure to measure granite to granite. In other words, your cabinet boxes might be 24" plus a 3/4" door panel plus a 3/4" granite overhang equals 25 1/2". If your distances around your island don't include the granite, you might find out it is tighter than you think. Best to know that now and not when your granite is finally installed. While a big island is nice, having room to walk around it is important too. For your island, you can always use full height vanity bases that are 18" or 21" deep instead of 24" to gain a little more space around your island. Enjoy!

p.s., if you do a mock up, be sure to use a full height cardboard box. Marking it with tape on the ground is not enough for you to feel if the space will flow. On ours, we had blue tape on the floor and it seemed fine. Once we moved full sized cardboard boxes into the area, it seemed cramped. We made our island smaller.

thanks dianelouise, good info that I hadn't realized. The kitchen space will be much bigger than what I have now, so I hoped it would fit a large island, but I am disappointed that I really can't. It is hard because walls have to come down and the current island is in the way before we can do a mock up. I think I have to order my cabinets before things get out of the way...

Are you saying you have a 36" aisle where you have seating backing to a pantry and a major path through the kitchen?????

I don't think you have room for an island of that depth and that width, and the clipped corners do not solve any issues, really.

If you really wanted an eating spot there, I try out an island like a long narrow high top (maybe 24" wide) that stools went completely under and possibly no storage or maybe some narrow open shelving under one side. So, it would be an island that functioned for eating, occasional worktop and nothing else. Otherwise its in your main traffic pattern.
