Please Provide Your Layout Advice on My Dream Kitchen
Comments (11)Wow--what a nice space you have to work in, and you've obviously put a LOT of thought into it. In reading your list of things important to you, you said: Ability to interact with others while prepping/cooking, with space to cook with family/friends My first thought was that the people sitting at the island are going to be waaayyy too far away from you to be able to visit with you while you prep and cook. If your kids are doing homework there, it's gonna be a long walk for you to go around and offer help (and you know they'll be asking!), because you won't be able to see what they're doing from your spot next to the prep sink. I can say this with confidence, because my own island is 8'X 4.5 ft, and when people are sitting there, 4.5 feet away from where I'm standing, it's at the outer edge of being a comfortable visiting distance--sometimes, it's slightly hard to hear them speak. Also, you will not be able to reach to the center of your island, making anything that's in the middle too far away to use easily and also making it hard to wipe off. If you put something decorative there, it may well block the view between the seating and you--which again, makes it hard to socialize. If it's your heart's desire to have a huge island, go for it, but just keep some of these things in mind as possible drawbacks. The second thing that jumps out at me is that the oven door appears to open across the doorway to the covered porch. I'd consider putting the oven to the left of the cooktop/induction burner and moving your pantry cupboards to that wall instead. I'm sure that others will chime in with ideas on this, there are some really great design minds on this forum! I agree with your idea of moving one of the dishwashers, presumably the one to the right of the sink? It's awfully far away from the dining room and the prep area, two places where dishes are most likely to be soiled. Putting it closer to the butler's pantry might make it easier to dispatch dishes coming in from the dining room, and if you're going to store your china or "good dishes" in the butler's pantry, it will make it easier to put them away as well. One thing I did with my recent remodel was look at my layout (amply tweaked by the folks on this forum) and "mentally" cook a meal, getting everything I'd need, prepping it, serving it, cleaning up, loading/unloading the dishwasher and putting things away. This gives you a "mental video" of how the kitchen will flow, and will also help you place the things you use when you prepare a meal. Others are sure to chime in with more suggestions for you--as I said, there are some really talented people on this board. Best of luck, it's going to be a "wow!" kitchen for sure. Don't forget to post pictures when you're done! Cj...See MoreMain sink across island from cooktop- too far away???
Comments (9)Refrigerator position... This one will have to be a personal preference choice... The refrigerator currently is in an ideal location for DR access...more milk, condiments, etc....as well as close by for putting away leftovers, those condiments, etc. It's also not a bad location for the island or Breakfast Nook seating. Yes, it's a longer walk from the FR for someone who wants a snack. If you switch w/the Ovens, it will mean a long walk from the DR...it will also be a longer walk from the cooktop & sink (for putting away those leftovers, etc.) A switch will also mean eliminating the "baking center" concept...unless you move the cooktop down to compensate. You might consider putting in a Beverage Cooler (undercounter refrigerator) in the upper right corner of the Breakfast Nook...it would solve both problems! If the uncercounter refrigerator doesn't appeal to you or won't work for whatever reason, then ask yourself... When do you use the refrigerator more...at meal & cleanup time or for snacks? Do you want a "baking center"? Your answers to these questions will show you where the refrigerator is best placed for you! Good luck!...See MorePlease help and advice with kitchen layout~
Comments (6)I have to ask...How many is 'mne?' My user name is pronounced "Our home for ten," since we have 8 wonderful kiddos. Do NOT make 2 storage areas for dishes and silverware on each side of the dishwashers! :-) Been there, done that... I made the mistake of doing something similar in our last house, and it was a pain. Things were never in the place I needed them or first looked. Why is your warming drawer on the other side of the island from the range? It seems that would be very inconvenient. Trash: In cabinet #20? It'd be close to the sink, the prep area, and the stove. Otherwise, maybe something on the cooking side and something on the other side...Is your dining area to the left? Is that a pass through or other kind of open bar on the left side? Ideas for using that side: 1)baking center...Maybe consider adding an oven? You didn't say you'd purchased the range...Have you considered a rangetop, cooktop, (or even a range) and separate oven(s)? The problem with having all the important working things on one side of the kitchen is that all the people helping need to be on the same side, too. Think of work zones for multiple cooks. I want places for someone baking, someone making salad, and 1 or 2 people working at the stove, and I don't want them all on top of or having traffic jams. 2) snack/breakfast/sandwich making area. Maybe keep your beverage cooler over there, or a microwave 3) a beautiful hutch or special cabinets for dishes...It's not really that far from the dishwashers. You can try to wash dishes in the left dishwasher and cooking utensils on the right. Now for the opinion I feel I must share...Big can be good, but too big can be a problem If your cabinets round into the curve, they are a LONG way from the island. Because your island is so deep, you have lots of real estate to cover running from one side of the room to another. I would really work on arranging it into task zones, and/or designate a certain portion of it as 'kitchen' and use the rest for storage, so you're not covering the whole area to make one meal. I know that's part of what you're trying to accomplish with having everything on the left, but make sure that arrangement will actually work efficiently for you. Best wishes!...See Morekitchen plan - too far from fridge to range?
Comments (15)Depends on how you cook but I'd prefer to have the sink close to the fridge so don't mind your distances and DEFINITELY would want the sink near the range - so would not like sailorman's layout. I have 5 feet between sink and stove and a straight shot of counter (prep space) between and it is almost too much - especially when cleaning the stove. (I'm not complaining about the prep space, don't get me wrong ... esp. since prep space is what we craved in our before model). Don't want to have to walk clear across fridge from stove to sink. That said, I like rhome's idea of bringing the stove closer to the sink in the diagonal wall in your layout especially because it will let you vent the stove out the house. That's a good thing. If your pantries are big enough you may very well be able to get away without any uppers. And with some open shelving you may not even feel too much of a pinch. Check out Pirula's and Rococogurl's kitchens in the Finished Kitchens Blog for a couple of instances showing such an implementation. There are others but I don't recall them now....See MoreRachel
