Can I marry this furniture to this kitchen or get a divorce?

Bought a lake house and updated the kitchen (love it) before moving in. Painted the first floor SW Agreeable Gray bc it was a dark green and faces north. Anyway, now that I have moved my living room furniture in the new space it doesn’t mesh with the new kitchen. How can I love both the kitchen and living room at the same time but not together? My tastes have changed since I bought the furniture so I could get a new style but I love the rug and would like to use it in the new place. Is there anyway these two could get along or should the living room furniture find a new home?

Very wise words...the OP would be wise to listen, but probably won't. No one ever thinks they need to get themselves in a good place before they date....seen it a zillion times. Oh and colorcrazy, you said "You don't want your husband to say you left him for another man", not sure if it is different from state to state or anything, but it likely has no bearing on anything. I am in NY, and my ex cheated on me 2X and for all practical purposes left me for the 2nd guy...my lawyer told me it has no impact on anything to do with the divorce, not division of assets, not alimony/child support (unless she married him eventually), not custody. What a great influence your church has been on the pair of you. (Sarcasm very much intended.) I have to ask, if you were in an on-off relationship with your now husband, why the he[[ did you get in a position to become pregnant? Bad idea. Sorry to be harsh, but your whole approach to relationships seems to be a series of bad ideas: -Get pregnant in an unstable relationship -Marry someone you don't love merely because pregnant -Before marrying get involved with someone else -Get involved with a married man -Know you're doing wrong but not stopping Could this be any more of a train wreck? Stop. Cut off all contact with this other man, it will only end in tears for two marriages. If he's unhappy in his marriage, let _him_ deal with it, sort himself out and be free to be in another relationship honestly. Change churches if you have to to avoid being in contact with this man. Get some counselling. Sort out _your_ feelings without the confusion of your infatuation with this other man. Consider carefully and decide if you want to continue with your marriage or not. Only you can decide if security is enough (sounds ATM like it isn't) but having decided, you need to follow through one way or the other. Either fully commit to your husband or divorce, don't sit on the fence. It's not fair to anyone concerned and is a terrible example for your children.

but prof. nice guy didn't ask about staying or leaving... exactly. He said he wanted to meet a woman who was more fun *& that his therapist encouraged him to do so*. which sounds like a lie. In fact, his initial post reads a little like a singles ad ("my sisters-in-law describe me as 'funny & sweet'", "I want to meet a woman who likes to laugh", etc) His request for 'advice' reads a lot like he's fishing for permission/approval/blessing,("it would be nice to keep my marriage but be emtionally close to someone, too") Snort! & his statement that his wife is willing to have sex without emotional involvement but he wants the involvement sounds really really strange, since it's backwards to what usually happens (woman wants emotional closeness, man willing to have sex without it). like he made it up & he's seeing what response it'll get. One of the worst experiences of my life was many years ago, when I was young & inexperienced & a married man caused me a lot of aggravation, but, as a result, my "married man on the prowl" detector still works pretty well:. I had been dating this guy for several weeks when I learned that he was married. only, as he said, since it didn't have anything to do with what went on between us, he didn't think he needed to mention it. He saw nothing wrong with lying to me, lying to his wife, complicating my life, his wife's life, his children's lives, heck, he wasn't worried about complicating *anybody's* life, as long as he could have dinner/clean house/charming children...& dates. It was degrading to be manipulated & lied to like that, it was mortifying to discover that I was the "other woman", & it was humiliating to extricate myself from the situation & answer the questions my friends asked about the "new guy" I had been so happy about. but the guy sort-of mentally shrugged & decided that I was just as crazy/needy/irrational as his wife, *since I was having a good time*... until I found out about this little bit of (irrelevant & superfluous) information. This is a married man on the prowl, looking for approval/justification, & he posted this to see what kind of objections he'd get, so he can refine his approach to the next "woman who likes to laugh" that he runs into in the real world. betcha.

Thanks for sharing your numbers Jane NY. I really didn't understand why the other realtor seemed offended because I thought our offer was a good starting place! That realtor actually apologized to my realtor for the way she reacted, so that's good at least. Congrats on your purchase! Brickeye you are right that zillow can be inaccurate - they had their zestimate of our current house at $290k about a year ago and now it's at $159k with no explanation. However, they do have our tax assessment and taxes paid listed correctly. Zillow is also a good place to find out how long houses have been on the market and how many times they have been re-listed. Their zestimates mean nothing to me though. At this point I'm almost glad they didn't accept our offer because I'm so excited about the possibility of getting this unfinished house with the great view of the city and river. However, if we can't make a deal on this new house I will go back and put our final offer in writing on the first house. Thanks again to all of you for your input. Kind of makes me wary of buying from a divorcing couple!

Definitely a challenge with cool tones in the modern kitchen and the warm tones in the more traditional living room! I think maybe the rug could work with new, more modern furniture and pulling some cool tones into the room.

Can you put the rug in the room and show us what that looks like? We can probably help you build from there.

Can you add one or two of the colors from the rug to some accessories in the kitchen?

Just brainstorming here and I’m not a pro.

IMO the house and the kitchen are modern and your style is not so a few tweaks are needed to make this work. !st take all the stugff that screams old fashioned like the display cabinet, the table along the wall the stuff on the mantel the morror and take the art down for now. Then get rid of the 2 red chirs and the rug , Now you have a bit of a clean slate to work with. I think the sofa is fine and maybe the 2 chirs with the ottomans. A new coffeee table ans arug with a bit more modern pattern in colors with a bit of gray Larger end tables with much larger lamps in a bit more modern style. If what you want to keep is the rug then keep it and build the new design around it with new furniture a bit more modern looking still keep all the other stuff out , I need to see a close up of the rug to make suggestions as to colors of new pieces .

You could certainly do an eclectic look, which is my style. Use your rug, and pick up your rug colors in wall art, accessories, throws, lamp bases, etc. When you get new furniture, make sure it is completely classic and simple (not trendy) in both color and style. That is the trick to an eclectic style in my opinion. "Eclectic style encompasses a variety of periods and styles and is brought together through the use of color, texture, shape and finish. ... Colors: The palette can vary, but it's best to stick with a few neutrals to help tie all the elements together." HGTV

Now that you have moved your furniture in, you could show some photos of the new living room with the furniture in it.

The movers put all our household goods in our new place and then we headed back to the old house (husband had surgery here) six hours away so I can’t show you the new space right now. I just thought I could get suggestions and so far it looks like I can keep the rug and build around that!
I will hire a decorator once we move in permanently next month but now I know what to expect!
