Help in paint/design exterior historic home
Comments (22)Where are you located? Yours home appears to be lacking some of the trim boards cornices, etc. that are typically found in the architecture of the Greek Revival period. Are there small windows above the ones we see that have been removed or sided over? Does your historical society have drawings (found on maps or early town renderings) or even nineteenth century photos of your home before it was altered? Do some research on its history. You might be amazed at what you discover! Any shutters that you acquire should be operable ones, with hinges, in the correct scale and style for your home. Some homes like yours never had shutters. And, as you say about your new home, these houses were always painted white. Often with dark windows and sashes. But the choice is yours.... Good luck with your lovely new/old home!...See MoreNewbie seeking exterior accent colors
Comments (8)You don't need a pergola, you need a canopy that drains water away from anyone who comes to your door. There are no posts. The canopy is attached to the wall of the house Add some details to your garage doors. You can either replace the top panels of the doors with panels that have windows, or purchase a faux window kit off Amazon to doll up the doors. https://www.amazon.com/Giani-Car-Weather-Resistant-Decorative-Garage/dp/B0765BW8DR https://www.amazon.com/Decorative-Magnetic-Garage-Window-Panes/dp/B077HZ8DTW...See MoreExterior paint 1970's stone facade accent and garage questions
Comments (5)Yes. Maybe medium gray on the roof. As for the paint, all the houses on my street that have been repainted recently are various shades of grey. I was hoping to not be exactly like everyone else which is why the shade of blue. We are in the western half of Washington state so generally mild weather with clouds but we don't have AC so maybe not such a dark roof. I agree gray would be the better choice though. (Although smoky summers might mean we need to consider getting AC.)...See MorePaint color dilemmas on historic home
Comments (3)Yeah in an ideal world I would have thought about the front more before I did the back. But I do like the dark. Just thought oh I’d paint it up front then i realized how many different trim bits the front has and got overwhelmed. maybe it would be fine to paint the wooden screens of the front window and sashes of the bay in the gunmetal color and leave the window frames and rest of trim white. I just worry with the white window frames and dark sashes, along with the dark metal bits and dark shutters it’s too many dark pieces and it could get a bit busy. Hence, i thought maybe just leave the front street facing windows and trim white and maybe bring the gunmetal in on shutters only or something. It’s not unusual in my hood to see some windows a different color on different aspects of a house(for various reasons, some accidental, some intentional) so not something that I’m super preoccupied about....See Moresammiejanew
