I do not grow this rose, but have observed it closely in a nearby regional garden when I was originally considering it . It most definitely NEEDS dead-heading which is one of the reasons I never pursued it. However, I think it all blooms together so there aren't ugly wads of tissue paper ruining the general look. Get yourself a long cut and hold garden pruner. I use one for my large shrubs and it's a ladder-saver. It climbs over a pergola in an area that gets colder windier weather than mine, but I had noticed some die-back Spring 2019. It should grow large for you. Looking forward to pics! It's a very beautiful climber.

I have 5 Edens by accident. Three were supposed to be Pretty in Pink Eden. Four are on arbors and the fifth is on a porch post. Four of them did nothing until the third year when i saw a wee bit of life, then the forth year they were what I had been hoping for. The youngest one on the porch post shot up faster than the others, maybe because it's in a more protected place. It is the largest of the five at approx 7-8'. Some say it only blooms once, but that once lasts all summer. The blooms last a long time on the bush. The new canes are flexible enough to train, but only when they're new. I don't zigzag them back and forth for more lateral growth. Mine grow straight up, otherwise they would not reach the top of the arbor. They're 3/4 of the way up, year 5. The blooms are huge and gorgeous, but there is no scent. Thrips don't bother them. No black spot or powdery mildew.

I was going to remove one that was a dud, so I chopped it down to the base and severed the roots all around the perimeter with the shovel and tried to pry it up, but couldn't budge it. By the time my husband got around to tackling it, it had filled out, was sending up long canes against the arbor, and blooming. Go figure. I'm glad I have them, but I wouldn't have chosen to have five.

Vapor, thank you! I am realizing how many factors need to be considered before choosing a rose that is worth growing in ones garden and then again how to place it. I was very lucky in my first go round to choose relatively easy roses by accident. Well, the hard ones have probably disappeared. I am probably going to grow all the roses I bought this year and the after 3 years or so remove all the ones that are draining.

Here are a few pictures from my Pink Eden this spring that I planted as a band last October.

As Flowers said the blooms are huge, easily 5 inches. Here they bloomed at the tips of laterals that grew from the one thin cane that was the rooted cutting, not even two inches above the ground. Its putting up many basals, maybe those will bloom this season. Actually some of the first basals bloomed in clusters at the tips.

I hope someone can comment on its rebloom. I seem to recall reading that it both blooms earlier and more often than its "parent". It's such a pretty colour. Where are you planting it?

Flowers thank you! Sounds like a unpredictable but resilient rose! I just dont know how I would feel if I planted a flowering shrub and it never bloomed for three years. I would probably think I just cant get anything right.

I am glad they are making you happy now. Were you referring to Pink Eden when you said blooms all summer? Just now I found a picture of grown PE.

this picture does illustrate the habit of PE, no? Grows straight up and one can pull the canes out towards the horizontal for more blooms. My own root band is growing like this.

Vapor, Ihave a long L-shaped trellis in mind. I want to plant it at the elbow of the L. That spot is highly visible but not on any path so its does not matter if the rose is not particularly fragrant. Visually stunning would be awesome.

Katy, it's just plain old Eden that has bloomed all summer. She's still putting out new blooms and I have not deadheaded her all year. All my Pretty in Pinks turned out to be Eden.

Only 1 out of 5 was a dud, and she is now trying to make up for lost time.

Your Pink Eden is fabulous. She will knock your sox off when she's mature. Your photos make me want to try again even more.

I grew 'Eden' many years ago when it first came out. The repeat was not good for the first few years, but it does get better in time, especially after 3 years.

As you may be aware, the 'Pretty in Pink Eden' originated on an Eden plant growing in Southern California. The individual who found it, Reg Tomerlin, posted photos of on this Rose Forum on Houzz; he named it after his mother, 'Margaret Mae', but it is sold as 'Pretty in Pink Eden' in the US. I presume that he presented it to the Meilland company, which may have offered him a royalty. It is patented in the European Union and in the US.

flowersaremusic: There are 2 possible reasons that the Pretty in Pink Eden rose plants turned out to the original Eden:

a. The budwood of these 2 varieties may have been mixed up; or when harvesting the 'PiPE' roses, some of the regular Eden plants got mixed in with the 'PiPE' plants.

b. Some of the plants of 'PiPE' rose plants had branches originating from a bud that back mutated to the original Eden. I am a plant breeder/plant geneticist (worked with tomatoes and rice, though would have preferred roses!), and know that this phenomenon is not all that rare. For those who have grown some of the older David Austin roses, the original plant release 'Mary Rose' (medium pink) produced 2 sports, 'Redoute' (blush pink) and 'Winchester Cathedral' (white).

I used to grow 3 plants each of these 3 varieties and one could find sports of the other colors on each of the plants. While breeders don't like to see genetic instability in their products, I think it adds to the charm of these 3 varieties.

I also have a plant of 'PiPE' and I have not seen any evidence of back-mutations to the original 'Eden' so far.

Thank you, John, for your insight. You have a fascinating job. I do love my Edens, I just have too many of them and not enough arbors! I fell in love with PiPE the first time I saw her so will probably try again.

My Mary Rose always remained the same, but my two Winchester Cathedral bushes produce mutations at least once a season, although nothing yet this year. I definitely think it's charming and look for it. My Colette even produced a half normal and half yellow bloom. It must have been Lunar Mist making an appearance.

My PPEs don't like the heat much. I don't know where you are, but it does rebloom when Sacramento gets back into tbe 80s.
That photo of PPE is much pinker than mine, which is magenta and almost indistinguishable from the Grande Dame it is planted next to. Photo is both.

Thank you @john_ca. I am glad to hear that the regular Eden reblooms upon maturity. Its such a beautiful, beautiful rose that gets so big, it would be a bit sad if it did not rebloom.

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA I have been reading a few past threads on Eden/Pink Eden and see your odyssey with the 5 presumptive Pink Edens. I am so sorry. That is lot to go through. I dont know how cold hardy PE truly is but I would start over and give one PE plant another try. I got mine as an own root band last fall and it is growing aaaamazingly well. I place fragrance almost as an absolute but now I put that aside for a bit and find what an extraordinarily beautiful rose this one is. The first time I saw it bloom this spring it looked like a many petaled lotus. I bought many roses this season but most of them are 12 of one and dozen of another, pretty close. This one is somehow unique. Its size, how heavy it is, the color and the shading of pink across the petals. It special. (Another rose I find unique is Bolero).

So you have regular Eden blooming for you now? Eden's flowers are very beautiful too I think. If it is easy for you would you share a picture of your Eden's blooms?

Incidentally my baby Colette (planted last fall) produced flowers of several different colors this spring, one of which was pale yellow. Now its making apricot-ish-pink blooms.

I have no idea how these things happen.

I think I would like to grow Eden too!

@sautesmom Sacramento: that is so interesting about the color of your Pink Eden. I have (several) Grande Dame growing near by and the color is very different from PE's. They are both shades of pink and that's it. Grande dame is definitely magenta with a lot of dark pink...I cant describe colors well. Whereas PE is what it looks like above. Shades of light and medium pink. Pink, pink, pink. No purple.

I tell you sautesmom, I am confounded by colors. I got some purple roses and they are not purple by any stretch. red and and maybe a tiny bit of blue.

I think your Collette is showing sports of Lunar Mist!!! Are the Edens thorny. I'm looking for something for my friend's shed and though low thorn might be best there.

Vapor: PE is a little thorny but nothing like say Laguna. I think it is manageable but I dont know your expectations.

Here is a picture of some canes. If you zoom in you can see the more mature cane to the left and the thorn distribution and their size/shape on it. The new cane (reddish) had a lot of spiny thorns, which scared me but it looks normal now, just like the other canes. This is how the thorns are on an young PE.

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA I know I read somewhere you wanted to get more Boleros but I cannot remember where. There are now Bolero for sale on Amazon from Stargazer Perennials. They are bands. I bought three Boleros from this outfit last year and they have turned out to be good plants. Just thought I would let you know.

Thank you, Katy. You have a good memory. The 3 Bolero's I already have were 3 gal. potted ones, and I would like to stick with that size so the new ones won't have so much catching up do to. I was thinking about doing an all Bolero, all white, bed along the patio, but I got over anxious and have planted a mixed bed. But, I'm going to check out Stargazer anyway for other roses I need.

The one I would really love to find right now is Vanessa Bell, 3 gal. Her hole is all ready for her, just waiting until I can locate one.

The bands of Bolero when I got them were small and had a little BS. Since I had never gotten bands before they looked especially small. However when I went on to planting them in the ground I found all three to be very well rooted. The three just hung in there all last year. I guess they were dropping roots. This year they just took off. I could not be more pleased.

The shrubs are much, much, bigger now but I dont have a current picture. I think I allowed them to grow by removing 95% of the forming buds. Still there are more than enough flowers.

I cant guarantee each and every purchase will be perfect but every rose I got from them is doing well. If you buy through Amazon you can return/get refund if you get a bad guy. Shipping gets less on multiples.

I dont have that much experience buying roses but I think this a good purveyor.

You will love Bolero, especially after a year or two!

I have Pretty in Pink Eden in zone 6a Ohio. She is a cottage eater — even on an east-facing wall with no direct sun after 1 pm.
Very cold hardy and robust. The first flush is extraordinary: hundreds of shocking-neon-pink blooms. The second flush is modest. Not much after that.
But I admit I don’t give her any fertilizer after one time in April/May because she’s enormous by July: 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide and still reaching for more.
She does get black spot by July if not sprayed.
I eventually moved her to a different location, slightly shadier, where her sprawl does not need to be maintained with pruning and tying up as much.
