Electricians refusing to finish our kitchen project

Our contractor started electrical work on our kitchen remodel. When we asked about permits, he stopped work and ghosted us. We've since contacted about eight electricians (and electrical contractors) in the Seattle area trying to find someone to finish the work. One agreed to pull a permit and finish the work - then he ghosted us too. We've been in touch and working with the state. Our contact there says they cannot legally recommend anyone, but that someone should be willing to pull a permit and finish the work. No dice. We're really at a loss. Any advice?

I live in the lake stevens area and while I haven’t personally used them, switch electric gets recommended in my community all the time. Maybe they can help? I believe they are actually based in Seattle.

We have a very similar berber carpet in our basement family room but it has small flecks of blue in it! We didn't go with blue paint because I couldn't find a blue that was light enough to be in the basement but had the look I wanted. Instead we have a beautiful Pratt and Lambert paint called Havana Cream on the walls, the ceiling is lighter and we have a blue paterned ottomon and lots of blue in our art and accessories. By the way we love the look and function of the carpet. It looks great after 5 years and lots of kid and pet abuse. Even survived a nasty orange soda experience!

I would be concerned about the working relationship from this point forward. I don't understand the polished granite vs. chalky limestone. Are you saying you chose granite for your countertops, and they installed limestone instead? That right there is a huge problem. Or are you talking about the material for your backsplash? Two things stand out in your OP. You were gone for three weeks, and the GC stopped by when you were gone. I learned a long time ago, that even with a contractor we had good experience with, if they worked while we were gone (at work), the work was inferior. We are getting work done to our bathrooms after our daughters leave for college in August. My husband wants to go on vacation while they work. I said absolutely not. Even though we have used this contractor for multiple projects we are happy with, I know we need to stay home to "babysit". It also sounds like this GC doesn't want to continue working with you. Sorry, but that's what I'm getting. They like easy projects, not projects that have to meet the standards of you and me. When it gets to that point in our home, I send in my husband to lay down the law. Your husband might not feel comfortable in that role, but see if you can get him to do the task. I don't know where you live, but in my area, contractors don't have much respect for women. In fact, I knew we could get along with our current contractor, because when we started our projects 18 months ago, he asked us who the boss was. We told him I was, unless there was a problem, then my husband took over. He smiled and said okay, and we have worked together beautifully. Good luck, I feel for ya.

How fun it is to read your compliments and comments! I wish I had found this forum long ago. I found it this past winter when I was doing Google searches on things like counter tops and islands. It's a great resource! And we call it our 20 year kitchen project because we still have the sink counter and the uppers over it to do as well as a space that I can use for baking/working (I am short and need a lower counter). And I'd like a new back door and a skylight in the back entry. We've ALWAYS worked on our houses and done it mostly ourselves. I like going slowly. For example, we will figure out how to configure the sink counter cabinets and upper cabinets based on what we find we still need now that the island is done.

What a wonderful playful looking space! Great green accents. I like how the added lights in the curved ceiling section really plays up the architectural lines. Really makes it a standout feature. Love all the drawers, the backsplash (of course!) and the improved layout. Thanks for sharing your LED color temperature solution. That drives me crazy too when they're not the same. It has been difficult to find the more neutral color temps (forget the exact kelvin temp at the moment), so your solution sounds great! I saw this really cool Lutron dimmer that reminds me of your space and would look really cool if it could work with your Insteon (I'm not familiar with this) dimming system, or if not, maybe something separate. In a single or a double switch plate, there is a thin vertical slot that has Green LEDs (also comes in Blue or White) that you can touch anywhere for the dimmer (all the way up is full On and any position lower is dimmed by seven levels I believe). And there is a small Amber light at the lowest point that softly glows when it is all off so you can find it in the dark. The wall plates are available in the 10 standard colors and 11 brushed metal colors so you could get a brushed aluminum or stainless steel looking one to match what looks like what you have (see the picture below). I'm going to use these in my bar in the Blue to coordinate with the granite countertops there, so just thought these would look cool in the Green for your great space. This is one of the most distinctive dimmers I have seen. The picture below is of the single in the Green with an aluminum plate (also comes in a double plate as well) and a link with the specifics. It may not be as simple as finishing the work. Now the new electrician is responsible for the entire shooting match. He may insist that any wiring be done or the very least exposed so he can see what hackery may have been done already. They may have more than enough new work that they have no desire to get involved with what could be a hot mess. Keep looking is all you can do. Ask at other construction sites, look for an older single owner operator type electrician he may be more open to this type of work.

Agree with millworkman. The best way to get the work completed is on a time-and-material basis and indemnifying the electrical contractor from any issues caused by work performed by others.

Who is doing the rest of your remodel? Inspections for electrical work have to be done before walls are closed up, so maybe that is the problem other contractors are having with trying to complet the work. Opening up walls to inspect work is possible, but adds more time. Your GC is the one who should be worrying about this.

I think he's saying the GC has run off (and wasn't following the rules with regard to permits and inspections anyhow).

I've got the feeling that there's something pretty badly wrong with what's there which is why nobody wants to touch it. A lot of trades don't give a lot of priority to self-GC'd projects. They make most of their money subbing.

Some electrical can be DIY if your jurisdiction permits that. Basic changes don't need to be that difficult if you can get someone to advise you. Several previous posters have asked for the scope of your work and what has already been done which, if answered, might help the community offer you more targeted advice.
