That looks great! I got a big laugh out of your 17 year project. Looks like you are doing it right though, and much less stressful than scrapping the whole kitchen at once.

Thanks, marti8a. Our taste in kitchen hardware and finishes has changed in those 17 years and we are going to have to change out some hardware and light fixtures.

I think our kitchen looks like it has Shaker and Amish influences (the plain people). DH thinks it looks like Craftsman meets industrial.

I, too, chuckled at your "Year 17" subject line. Everything looks great -- and so warm and welcoming. I'm envious of your nice big expanse of island. Looks like there's going to be a lot of cooking going on. Congrats!

Our house is a 1920's bungalow but the outside isn't as fancy as many of the other bungalows in our neighborhood. For example, the houses in this set are mostly within a block of our house.

Our house just isn't classic enough to get a photographer's attention, though it is pretty nice on the inside. On the other hand, our house exterior is not nearly as much work to paint.

I dug through my old photos (they are a mess in a box). This is a photo of the kitchen 17 years ago. There's the aluminum sliding window and the Home Depot stair spindles, and the COLD off white color and the dark green floor and the old island and the old hardware and the upper cabinets before John replaced the panels with glass, and the gigantic hole for the microwave. I think it looks a bit more inviting now.

Donaleen: you have such a pretty kitchen and not just because I'm partial to your marmoleum, either. Your DH covered up the groovy wood on the island drawers! Drat. I loved that. But so lovely and you must have the patience of Job for a 17 yr. remodel. Next time I want to complain about ours taking too long, I'll think of you and hold my tongue. Everything looks really nice. What a comfortable, charming kitchen. Nice job!

How fun it is to read your compliments and comments! I wish I had found this forum long ago. I found it this past winter when I was doing Google searches on things like counter tops and islands. It's a great resource!

And we call it our 20 year kitchen project because we still have the sink counter and the uppers over it to do as well as a space that I can use for baking/working (I am short and need a lower counter). And I'd like a new back door and a skylight in the back entry.

We've ALWAYS worked on our houses and done it mostly ourselves. I like going slowly. For example, we will figure out how to configure the sink counter cabinets and upper cabinets based on what we find we still need now that the island is done.
