Help with Updates to Awkward Kitchen Layout

Hi everyone!

My husband and I just moved into an adorable cape cod on a farm. We love most of the house, but this kitchen needs some functional updates to allow for more storage, seating, and open space, and we're really stuck on the vision (the kitchen layout feels so awkward to us).

What we've done:

  • Removed a wall that was built to accommodate the refrigerator (see markings on the floor) and moved the refrigerator to another wall
  • Painted half the kitchen from yellow to gray

What we plan to do:

  • Move the pantry out of the existing area to open that space up.
  • Close off and move the existing the garage door
  • Replace the countertops with granite or quartz
  • Retain the cabinets but replace with matte black hardware
  • Add a farm sink with a new matte black faucet
  • Replace all the white lights with more modern fixtures.
  • Replace the backsplash

What we aren't sure of:

  • Do we have enough room for an island? If so, which direction would it go? Length of the room or width of the room?
  • Would this space be better suited for a breakfast bar instead? We thought about adding one where the pantry currently is, but...the other side of that wall is a bathroom...seems a little close for comfort when eating food.
