Please post the images here it does not come up for me. Also if you really want help the first step is a to scale floor plan showing this issue and all windows, doorways and measurements clearly marked and some idea of the spaces around this area. I for one hate having to go back and forth to see what I ma dealing with.

Hi Alyssa: I checked out your links and it would be simpler if you attached the photos here to Houzz as well as your floor plan. From the photos it appears the “obstacle” is there to permit enough headroom to go downstairs - is this correct? Are you living in a house that was converted to flats in the UK?

@Sharon Brindley Designs Yes you are correct on the obstacle. I live in Canada, a single level open concept home with a basement.

The obstacle is less of a problem than the way the previous remodel dealt with it. Putting a standard depth base in that corner is what creates that weird corner jutting into the room. If you put used semi-custom cabinetry, you could get the depth of the cabinet to align with the other cabinet on the fridge wall. You'd have a bit less counter and storage (I guess), but much better movement the counter you have would be more useable.

@cawaps No :( , unfortunately we cant do that, you can't create a smaller custom cabinet for the awkward corner as it needs to stick out that far, there is no storage under there to begin with. I was thinking of bringing the cupboards out to line up with this part to make it more seamless and add some cupboard/counter space, but it will take away floor space.

Hi Alyssa, I think cawaps was suggesting the sink cabinet be deeper - can you repost the dimensioned Floorplanner, on my screen I can’t see the layout and measurements properly - most of what I see is the fold between the 2 pages.

This seems to be your best option. Looks like you would have floor space similar to your inspiration picture.

Hi Alyssa: are you considering any structural changes?

Can you turn the staircase at the landing to go right instead of left?

If your budget does not permit, I would recommend treating the space as a galley kitchen and moving the sink from under the window. In this floor plan, I have provided the dishwasher but changed the fridge to a smaller, European one (narrower, but taller, like this one: https://www.blombergappliances.com/products/refrigerators/freestanding-refrigerators/24-inch-counter-depth-bottom-freezer-refrigerator-brfb1322ss.html); maximize upper storage and use the obstacle as more counter space. I’ve also moved your stove to the opposite wall but don’t know I’d this will work for you, venting-wise.

the outline that course411 might be your easiest option, and will give you deeper cabients / deeper counter. but would it close in the floor space too much? or instead of that, consider getting a counter depth fridge. you'd still have the weird corner, but with the fridge not sticking out as far, it would look less awkward and help the kitchen feel more open overall.

one final idea: how far is the wall where your breakfast table is? would it be too far to move the fridge over there? it would make the space feel much bigger and give you a lot more counter space. plus you could have a small pantry built next to the fridge (here's an example of what I'm talking about). obviously it means no more breakfast table, but your kitchen is so small, you may need to sacrifice something.

@SeattleMCM Agreed this would be the easiest option, it would close the floor space quite a bit, I have been trying to decide if it would bother me much, and thanks for the counter depth fridge tip, that does make sense!
