Dark Cabinets and Smart Hidden Storage Update a 1980s Kitchen
Reconfiguring the floor plan helps create better flow and establish a work triangle for more function
Looking for better traffic flow and more prep and entertainment space, this empty-nester couple set out to remodel their original 1980s kitchen with the help of designer Kathi Fleck. But before beginning, the couple tasked Fleck with one more request: to include a subtle nod to the wife’s Scottish heritage. Fleck responded to the latter request with tones of green in the backsplash and granite countertops and with red glass pendant lights above a dining area.
AFTER: Fleck reconfigured the space to bring the refrigerator to the full wall, freeing up the entryway for better flow and creating more of a work triangle.
Dark-stained maple cabinets help offset the subtle hues of muted green in the backsplash and granite countertops and the red in the pendant lights and window treatments, not shown.
Mission-style cabinets: Factory Builder Stores; backsplash: Emser Tile; floor: Daltile; plumbing fixtures: Ferguson

Fleck paid special attention to incorporating smart storage solutions inside the cabinets. Here, pullout baskets hold fresh fruit and vegetables.
Slide-out shelves make full use of the deep cabinets for pantry space.
A spice rack pulls out conveniently near the range.
Deep drawers store pots and pans and large serving dishes.
Near the sink, a slide-out trash and recycling bin system also includes a drawer for storing trash bags.
A Lazy Susan and swing-out shelves make use of corner storage.
BEFORE: Here, a cutout above the original sink area offered minimal connection to the nearby living room.
AFTER: Fleck removed the partial wall and upper cabinets to create more openness to the living room.
