Paint Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help on Kitchen update

Would love some ideas on updating our kitchen. Here are some pictures.

We want to update the colors a little. Our walls are beige/ off-white & ideally want to keep them since they are in great condition. The orange-y cabinets are not to our liking but came with the house. They are solid & in excellent condition so replacement is not an option but we are open to having them painted.

- What changes would you suggest if we were to keep the beige walls + the black granite countertop.

- What (neutral but pleasant) color could the cabinets be painted & can anyone give an idea of cost of having cabinets painted?

- What is the approx cost of having backsplash replaced? Even though it is in excellent condition it's not to our personal taste.

- How do we know if our floor is the kind that can be stained another color? We feel it's a bit too orange.

Im remodeling a similar kitchen. After negotiating, yesterday a painter quoted $5600 cash for cabinets only (down from $6300) and another $9500 including painting ceilings and wall. I live in San Jose, CA, one of the most expensive cities in the country. I think anywhere else would be a little less. I'm doing white cabinets and walls, extending trim to to the ceiling for a cleaner look, large white subway tile backsplash, and a Spanish patterned floor tile. If your floors are wood they can be refinished. I've done that twice and love the medium brown they are now. Roughly 5-7K for around 800 sq ft. I posted my before earlier this morning. you can see it under my activity.

Thank you all for the great ideas. So we have not moved into the house yet the pictures I sent where from the listing. The pictures below captures the feel of the house. The kitchen opens onto the family room. The fourth picture is the furniture that we purchased for the house (including the coffee table). The fifth picture is what I am going for for the kitchen. I feel the house (mostly the depressing paint colour which we will repaint) needs some brightening up in the kitchen. Painting the cabinets is not in the budget but the current colour is classic I. The light fixtures will be changed - I will be going for 2 - 4 light Hanging lantern pendants on the island and a six light one for the breakfast table (sixth picture). In my current home I have a dark counter top (blackish) and I don’t like it. I’ve always like the sharp look of white (ish) quartz. I was leaning towards subway tiles but i don’t want anything to busy. Let me know your thoughts

You can probably just buy new LED lights for your existing track. I has the large cans and found three small modern looking heads with colored glass lenses at ReStore for $1 each and just bought LED bulbs at IKEA to replace the halogen lights. You will need to remove one of the existing heads to check the type of track, some has 2 conductors and some have 3, some are line voltage and others are low voltage. The lights usually push against the rail and twist out or might have a pull down spring loaded connection. They might be a little stiff but shouldn't be too tough to remove so keep trying until it pulls out without needing too much force. I have known people to just pull and end up breaking the little tabs on the connection to the track

I would not spend that kind of money on old cabinets with worn spots. Start from the beginning and get a KD in there. You may have to save and wait to do what you want, but what you're suggesting is "lipstick on a pig". Sorry to be so brutal but we've seen this happen SO many times on GW, and 2 years later, owner is wondering if she can reuse her very expensive countertops. The answer is usually "probably not".

Best to google or search houzz for two toned u shape kitchen. it is large enough . dark lowers and lighter uppers maybe new glass doored fronts . slate look vinyl squares on floor ..... lighter counter and splash. where is eating area re to kitchen? a bonus thing would be add stack drawers under open curve counter spot!!!

Your cabinets are nice, and not at all dated. Use your budget to replace the back splash with a simple cream tile, which is very inexpensive. If you can afford more, change the countertops to a cream quartz. That will give you the biggest change in the look of the room. If you're trying to minimize the yellow tones, I would paint the walls a more taupe color of beige rather than the yellow beige you currently have. Leave the cabinets alone. A flooring contractor can check your hardwoods to see if they can be sanded and re-stained.

@calidesign Thanks for your message! Replacing backsplash is on our list- would you know how much we should be looking to spend on it?

We don't want to replace the black granite countertop since it's hardly 3 years old & in very good condition (again, came with the house) so we don't want to waste it. We'll probably go down the cabinet color changing route.

Thanks for the Taupe suggestion for the walls, surely want to reduce the yellow tones all around the house.

another thought... keep flowers wood and change only uppers to white... in a couple of your photos in your idea book you show a wood Island with white perimeter, so thought that might be an option
