I think it would be a real shame to lose the intentionally rustic look of the home. Are you sure you can't just love it as it is? I've never considered a log cabin as something that needed to be modernized, and that one looks to be especially lovely.

I think I can definitely love it as is too! It's something we re toying with but definitely isn't a MUST for us. I just came across some really gorgeous white interior log cabins and I feel like it had such a beautiful first impression that I wouldn't have expected.

I think it would be a shame to paint it white too. We live in a log cabin and I would never paint it white. The space you show is lovely as is. Once you paint it white theres no going back.

You love the country feel of a “rustic” log cabin (and it looks pretty high-end) yet you want to “modernize” it. Agree with above posters, no painting, it’s beautiful as is.

Never said it was a must to whitewash or paint the log cabins, I am here for suggestions not snide comments. Thank you to those actually being helpful with recommendations. Yes I do think some white/brighter furniture will help brighten up the place. I also love the idea of possibility white washing the fireplace a little. Thank you!

I am not a lover of log houses but I do appreciate good design always. If it was mine I think I would just leave the wood but bring in some really cool modern furniture and white cow hide furniture comes to mind along with some really good LED lighting in 4000K. That would brighten it up and add just enough modern to make it yours. So large pieces of art all of that will achieve what I think you want without painting. BTW it's your house and what ever you decide is the right choice. We did this kitchen in a 1905 house we also added back in the

rest of the house all the trim which had been removed IMO a better house and it was ours.I do not think everything needs to stay the same for ever .

yes I agree with you! The kitchen definitely needs work, its dark and old. And I think just giving that a facelift will made a huge change in the look/feel of the house because its all an open concept layout. I would probably do a white or very light powder blue/gray cabinetry with stainless steel appliance, white farmhouse sink, and light countertops, subway tile backsplash, and also considering some dry wall paneling just between the beams above kitchen area only.

I think maybe white washing the fireplace just enough to brighten it up would also definitely be an option for us.

And maybe using slab fronts would help give you that "modern feeling" without being overtly so.

I'd love a cowhide rug and wanted to get one for my son's room when we redid it but he said NO! I couldn't believe it. Some simple, Scandinavian-style furniture, avoid the "standard" log-cabin decor; maybe get a beautiful quilt to hang as a "nod" to the location/country.

In regards to furniture - do you think white is a no go? I'm not a fan of leather or dark tones, and I was thinking plush white sofas/sectional to give it some contrast.

I am a fan of a pickled finish. Here is a photo of some plywood that has been pickled. It allows the grain of the wood to show through. That being said I'm wondering if a pickled, whitewashed or painted finish would be a bit overwhelming (even more so than the abundance of wood). So, it's kinda of a toss-up for me - leaving the interior as is or applying a treatment. As others have suggested, brighter furnishings should help lighten the place as would light colored curtains. I'm also thinking the expanse of wall of the right would be a good place for a tapestry or wall hanging of some type. That would cover up some of the expanse of wood. Good luck!

right i agree! I feel like we can't go wrong either way truthfully. I just came across some photos of white washed log cabins when I was looking for log cabin interior design in general and it just really took my breath away!

I think the white is kind of stark? Maybe a cream or ivory? But that's up to you and whether you have pets, kids, maybe a slipcover would be the way to go in that case.

ETA: for me, the log cabin aesthetic highlighted in the last photo is just too much. I don't think log cabins require antlers, skulls, etc. But incorporating a few pieces to tie in the modern aesthetic with the history and nostalgia of log cabins would give you the feel you may be looking for.

You might gain inspiration from the makeover Sarah Richardson did for a contemporary ski chalet. She has a series of videos on YouTube and pics on her website. In your case, I would add contemporary not farmhouse details.

I’ve seen some problems with a translucent too white paint wash on cedar and pine, the wood can go pink in a big hurry. Not good. I do like how Sarah painted out some timbers, she left the ceiling as is in the great room but painted the wood ceiling in the master bedroom.
Take it slow. Leave the FP stone as is, I’d try a large painting over the fireplace, not the tv. Lightening the kitchen counters and cupboards will go a long way.
