Comments (1)Monkey grass? Durable, shade tolerant, drought tolerant. Tough roots. PITA to put in, but stays put. Here is a link that might be useful: Monkey grass...See MoreSummer Solstice--Take your shade pictures
Comments (3)I started to map my shady areas this morning but couldn't maintain focus. I know the shade pattern has changed over the years since my first shade study in 2006 but since everything is going gangbusters, I'm guessing the plants don't really care/have adapted themselves to their growing conditions. I did plant some winter sown Dianthus, dig out & pot up a handful of volunteer Virginia knotweed seedlings....See MoreSpring crop failure
Comments (5)Our temps have been jumping around so much it was hard to tell what to do - so I planted the kale and spinach I had started, didn't bother with the broccoli that had been in starter cells too long. Never did get lettuce, etc. in earlier this week but going to do it today (was potting up tomatoes and started hardening off yesterday). Getting some rain this week but don't exactly know how much/when yet, figured it might be a good time to seed. Might do the beans this weekend too since the soil out back(pen sunny area) is warmer than the soil (shaded) near the house where I put the kale. SlmiyOkra - so sorry no spring crops for you. I just have to see what happens with mine. Temps here look like they're going to keep swinging from one extreme to the next, not even sure about putting out tomatoes next weekend, peppers definitely waiting til June. What are your lows (and lower highs) going to be? And have you moved yet?...See MoreJodi, I have a question about Alaska.
Comments (6)Hey Jude (I've always wanted to say that :-) On Monday May 17th we'll be leaving on a 13 day cruise from Los Angeles to Seattle, five ports in AK and then to Victoria/Vancouver, Canada where we fly home on May 30th. I suspect it will be light most most of the day. I know when I was in Antarctica during the summer, a photo I took at midnight came out exceptionally well because of the light levels. Course nothing but lichen grow in Antarctica so I didn't witness the long day/fast growing plant phenomenon. I will try to remember to take a photo of a few plants early in the day on one or more of our stops and then before we board the ship that night to test your theory. Coincidentally, just last weekend I was on a hike where the docent told us the Yucca plant grows equally fast during spring and summer months and were encouraged to take a photo of a Yucca at the beginning of the hike and later on the return trip. We never got close enough to a Yucca to measure the height early on, so that theory never got tested. My biggest fear of going to AK in the spring or summer is not the wild animals, but the mosquitoes which are supposed to be thick as soup in some areas. I do not deal well with skeeters. I am allergic to many of them and scar for months from their bites. Gosh, the first time I went to AK, I was challenged to find a boat from the TV show The Deadliest Catch, which I did. This challenge will be much easier if I can remember to bring a tape measure. :-) Jodi-...See Morewintercat_gw
