Ovens...too many? locations? Please help.
Comments (12)I may have misread your plans but it doesn't appear that you have any counter space next to your stacked ovens. There's a pantry on one side and the refrigerator on the other. It's quite handy to have a counter adjacent to the oven. Maybe this isn't that important since you will have a range or perhaps you plan on just using the island. I'd also take another look at the placement of the refrigerator. It's a real step saver to have the frig on the same wall as the main sink, or at least the prep sink. In your plan you'd have to make a 180 turn just to take something from the frig to the sink- and that's a very common act. Just imagine making a salad - taking all the ingredients out of the frig and then washing, cutting, and dumping waste into the garbage disposer. The same thing goes for filling a pot of water and carrying it to the stove. pllog's right about sprinkling work areas around the kitchen. Visually it might look balanced but it will increase your steps. I don't know where you are in your plans but one way to see if your design works for you and the way you cook is to make a mockup. You can spread a roll of shelf paper out on your counters and then draw your appliances and cabinets on them, don't forget to include the island. Then 'play house' and pretend to make a meal. It may sound simplistic but it can be really helpful. This isn't appliance related - but if you only have one window in the kitchen I'd opt for the largest one that will fit. In our kitchen I couldn't wait to rip out the window over the sink and then we installed a bay window in maximize the light....See MoreYour Opinions re: Range vs Cooktop & Wall Oven
Comments (15)If you are extremely concerned about aging in place, then IMO the single best thing you can do re. your ovens -- whether range ovens or wall ovens -- is to ensure they have full extension racks. These let you do almost everything without physically having to reach INTO the ovens to lever something heavy out of them. Basting turkeys doesn't require removing the turkey at all; you simply slide out the rack, baste away, and slide it back in. I don't need to bend to baste in my range oven - the height of the turkey is exactly at my arm height without bending over (I'm almost 5'8"). I do have maybe a 30 degree bend at the hips to roll out the rack, but honestly by the time I can't bend 30 degrees I'll have bigger problems like not being able to get in and out of bed or sit in the 'throne room' so I'm not too worried about that since I'll be in a nursing home by then regardless. :) I went with range for the way it works and looks in my kitchen. I suppose in a couple or three decades from now I may have trouble lifting a heavy turkey out of the oven, which will maybe happen 2 or 3 times a year. But then I figure that if I'm cooking a turkey that large, there'll be kids or grandkids that can lift out the turkey. I don't envision cooking a 20 lb turkey for a totally geriatric crowd myself ... by the time i'm that old and hosting a gathering for my geriatric friends, lol, I won't be serving them a turkey dinner. :-) Anyway, that's a long winded way of saying that the decision to go range vs. cooktop/ovens is IMO largely about either looks (wall ovens = more upscale to many people) or usage patterns (e.g. if you bake a lot and wish to have a separate baking center with ovens in a baking zone separated from a cooking zone). Ergonomically, get the full extension racks whichever way you go....See MoreKitchen appliance advice: rangetop or range with griddle + wok?
Comments (7)If you're not insistent on a self clean oven, the Bluestar fits your bill as well. You may or may not be familiar with the way the grates can be removed, allowing a Wok to nest right down into the burner. Works fabulously! I've had my 36RNB with griddle nearly three years, and absolutely love it. If only in my dreams I'd have room for a 48", a 24" griddle would be in my kitchen! I do as much cooking, if not more, on the griddle than on the burners. Personally, I've never quite understood the attraction of self clean. I had a S-C Thermador for 27 years. I used the feature maybe two or three times early on, and never again. I've had my Bluestar almost three years, and not had to clean the oven yet. To me, one great benefit of a manual clean gas oven, is the lack of electronics, leaving less chance of repairs easily made by oneself....See MoreHelp w/ location of oven/microwave in remodel
Comments (14)HI Scott -- going by your sketch --- Left wall (cooking wall ) remove the fridge but leave the wall oven tower and then center the new slide in stove (for second oven ) or just a cook top in the remaining space . Now re-move the small island and all of the other sink counter . Put the fridge across from where it was on the other side of that doorway . Now all the remaining space have a big island that will have the sink and dishwasher and storage . Have the sink across from the stove . This now has all the functions of the kitchens in the proper layout . The new island can now have stool seating on the opposite hall side if you want . I hope you can follow my explanation Scott....See MoreJason Lewkowicz
