Help! What door hardware finish should I choose.?
Comments (4)ksd51, We are in EXACTLY the same situation. GC suggested antique nickel. We are debating the Venetian Bronze vs. Polished Brass, on white doors. We dropped ORB due to living finish and side-by-side handles where one is used more frequently than the other. Leaning toward Polished Brass, which we currently have, mostly because the Venetian Bronze is almost black, and we are not sure we want the sharp contrast. Plus we are comfortable with the polished brass and we know we like it. And it has been trendy for centuries! I am also suffering from sticker shock, especially for hinges. We will probably get solid brass hinges, and there is a huge price difference between products, over 4:1 difference....if its solid brass, is there any reason to pay more for a hinge?...See Morewhat should I finish my knotty pine ceiling with?
Comments (6)I'm in a similar situation, but am starting my own thread about it-- don't want to be a hijacker. Just wanted to say linseed, though wonderful in many regards, probably would darken your ceiling quite a lot. I've sprayed in on my father's shake roof at his insistence, and was a little apalled at how much it darkened. But encourage mildew? No. You don't get mildew unless you have moisture, and then your wood finish isn't the main concern. Linseed was used in interior and exterior oil paints for years, was only replaced when petro chemicals became a cheaper alternative. I'd use some scrap pieces for color tests before commiting to anything. If you paint a wall the wrong color, its easy to paint over it. Wood finishing is a great deal less forgiving-- a penetrating finish like linseed can never be completely removed and will affect every subsequent layer you put over it [accept, again, for paint]....See MoreUnable to find true black out curtains...should I just go to shades?
Comments (43)You could also hang the curtains on rings that attach with metal clasps. That makes them easy to remove to clean. Most draperies and curtain rods have "returns" on the sides. You could run your blackout curtains on rods underneath the outer ones. Putting them all on rings allows for them to be pulled to the side and opened. A curtain that has a rod pocket and is threaded onto a rod is not able to slide open. You might be able to slide them back with some effort, but that is awkward. I recently put my grand daughter's curtain on rings so that it could be opened. Her mother and other grandmother are more attuned to closing themselves and her up into the house. They never cared nor questioned that the curtains were permanently closed. That was back in September and the curtains are still open as I left them. The curtain is a very nice custom made one that I made. It was hung on a temporary basis that never got addressed for two years until I put it on rings. She is only three years old and I don't think she even knew that there was a window there. Now there is a little more than just an overhead light in the room. Now there is some real daylight. If you use separate blackout curtains it leaves your outer layer of curtains to be changed when you feel you need something different and you still have your blackouts. Have you looked at buying blackout lining at Joanns? Do you sew? You could do one solid panel across the window, as opposed to one on each side, and just have it slide to one side when you wanted it opened. I used to do draperies and they used to sell one by RocLon that worked quite well. That was some time ago and things may have changed....See MoreWhat paint finish should be used on Front Door and Shutters?
Comments (7)I use Satin, but, it really is up to you, how much gloss you really like. Semi gloss is glossier, but, most of the semi gloss I have used recently, isnt as glossy as semi gloss used to be years ago....See MoreAglitter
