After 25 years I’ve learned if it just shows up it’s usually a weed. There’s only one and it just showed up and has grown to this. It’s blocking a sprinkler head but it’s kind of interesting. Any idea?

I bent to give it a sniff but there was nothing. Now that you’ve ID’d I have read about it and will try it again tonight. What an interesting accident this little thing is

Pls help us to help you by showing a pic of the whole thing & also telling us what the plant it is, if you know. Where in the world are you geographically pls. Am guessing it's somewhere tropical & from the precision of those dots, I'd guess some kind of fern spores, how some ferns reproduce, not from eggs nor baby plantlets like some succulents, but from spores.

Kinda hard to see in the pictures, but the lighter colored rear, which is overlapping wings, is a hallmark of chinch bugs. Major pest of grass and grain crops. There are "false chinch bugs" that are less damaging, but look similar. Might want to ask at your local extension service.

Yes, a few of these planted will perfume the entire garden in the evening. And the hummingbirds love them!!
