Low VOC paint for beadboard and trim?
Comments (2)Hello Twojrs! Surprisingly, VOC-levels and perceived odors have NOTHING to do with each other. (Per our senior C2 chemist, and various industry reports) Case in point: * Zinsser 123 Latex is a VERY good primer! Decent VOC-level too, @ ~ 100g/L. * BUT...I CAN'T STAND the smell of it!!! I won't use it. * The C2-One primer VOC-level is higher @ ~ 150g/L. I hardly notice any odor!! I could prime with this stuff all day! Our customers tell us the same thing. Don't use ANY Oil-based products in your home. >>> Typical Oil-based paints/primers are in the 350-500g/L. range. >>> Some have "lesser" odors than others, but the VOC's are horrendous. >>> Use their best Latex primer and you'll be just fine. We dropped our Kilz primers (on purpose) 2 yrs. ago. We just have a few Zinsser & C2-primers now. (I'm not sure why we still have the Kilz original OIL...the VOC's AND the smell are terrible!! Recoating in an hour is the one benefit...) Faron...See MoreHow strong is odor of B-I-N Shellac stain blocking primer?
Comments (19)sambah006 Unfortunately Alkyd primers don't cover tannin and stain as well as BIN. I am redoing dark stained oak cabinets and after multiple coats of both primer and paint, the stain will bleed its way through. The only thing so far that has calmed this is BIN from my tests. I know that paints and primers (Latex/Water based is what i'll call alkyd, or anything in the same types) have come a long, long way compared to just a few years ago. The ways when people would stick to oil based because it worked better. Well the water based have come a far way, but they still don't have BIN blocked on the most stubborn of stains. I also think my scenario is just an extra difficult one, unfortunate for me and its making a lot of extra work. For regular projects, an Alkyd may do the job just perfect without any of the harshness BIN brings. I would try to go the water based route every time over the more chemical laden one. When it comes to stains and odors on walls for instance (Not stubbor tannin and wood stain), I'm sure the water based/latex/alkyd products have that covered no problem by now....See MoreGas smell on clothes from new Speed Queen dryer
Comments (34)Shelley, as referenced above, have you done any remodeling/ painting/ new cabinets/ flooring, etc. in the laundry room or the house? What part of the house is the dryer located? Basement? If so, you're likely smelling combusted VOC's emitted from the new building materials Doesn't matter what brand the machine is; it happens. I've always had electric dryers so I know from personal experience that the odor can happen with electric units as well as gas ones. I have a basement laundry...the process seems to take longer...my theory is that the air in the basement doesn't get exchanged as readily as other parts of the house---depending on where you live and how much your air conditioning/ heating unit runs/ location of return air vents. etc....See MoreHorrible Smell from Marvin Integrity Windows Installed 1 month ago
Comments (120)I will cut one apart this Sunday or Monday. I seriously doubt Marvin will do anything still. The only way to identify the VOC is to do chemical analysis. I will post pictures of the inside of the frame and we can see if it is worth paying for a lab. I pulled the windows out of my house and rigged in the old ones because of the obvious health concern of 24/7 exposure....See MoreJennifer Hogan
