The shapes, proportion and scale of the house in the photo are very challenging. The house is symmetrical, but the gable in the center does not have the same shape, pitch or fascia detail. The proportions of the house make adding a porch form (roof) challenging, as PPF suggests. Finally the scale of the porch and any columns should be sympathetic to the rest of the house. The columns in the first photo are much too small, while those in the second and third photos are much to bulky. A very careful study is need to see if and how a sympathetic porch may be added. If it was my house, I might be looking at a horizontal arbor or trellis type porch with appropriate detailed and scaled columns, rather than any sort of pitched roof. IMO, that white column is too fancy-looking and monumental for the house. They look colonial and the main part of your house looks industrial? And maybe the column is too far to the edge of the porch? Actually, to me it looks tilted. That's metal siding? If so, I would look more industrial-y for the column and figure out how to blend the chimney in. Actually, I would re-think the entire porch and make it more current and less conventional. Right now, it doesn't look like it really goes with the architecture of the house. Could you take some more photos so we can see the whole house? Different angles? The yard?

I would suggest adding a wide band of trim just above where the tops of the columns meet the wall. This should give the illusion of a beam being supported by the columns. The columns seem a bit undersized. I think I would replace them but instead of plain square columns I would give them a brick base with a brick or stone cap. I "might" suggest painting the entire house the same color - brick and siding but you should really give some thought to that. Once painted, brick can never be unpainted. It is a lovely house and a great lot. I LOVE the mature trees. Good luck!

We tried power washing with little improvement. There was water, which led to mildew and moss, which is gone now. What’s left are stains from that (I called them water stains for simplicity’s sake). Not sure if we’ll be able to get them off or not.
