I would be much less bothered by details not being worked out to perfection than I would if the overall scheme was not worked out so as to function properly. If this house was newly built and had no walk or drive at all, would we be installing a drive whose left edge cut rightward at a pronounced angle (so one would back out of the left side of garage and run off the drive if they weren't being careful.)? You might examine the sidewalk issue by pretending that neither drive or sidewalk exist ... and how would you make them if you were starting from scratch? Working out the geometry of the layout would be the most important thing to get right. Once that is known, you could see how the existing surfaces can conform to the desired outcome. If the surfaces are in good shape, you could probably add on to them with the same material and obtain an integrated appearance. That has more appeal to me than adding bluestone or something else to the mix. Depending on the layout, it might work out so that another material could be added, but I'd want to see the layout first. If the string and stakes represents a new walk, you should think about making it a little wider. Also, why do you wish to have a separate walk when the drive and walk are in close proximity? In general, I think of "modern" as simpler, more direct and well functioning. (Modern people don't like to put up with things that don't work well.)

Beware the sloping walkway. The idea sounds nice, but this is the type of situation that needs completion of thought which is often overlooked. If the walkway rises to the stoop, the soil on either side must be added to in order to rise with it. That sounds simple enough. But that also means that the soil will be higher than the soil up against the main part of the house. This will trap water and will obviously slope back toward the house directing runoff toward it. The pictures that I posted above (red house) show exactly this situation as it is handicap access. As simple as it looks, this took careful planning and some major alterations to that porch design. All the framing of the porch is pressure treated wood. It is coated with a waterproof membrane and then has stone and mortar over it (on top of a poured concrete wall and blocking on a footing to support the masonry). More importantly, the porch juts out 10' from the main wall of the house. That along with the grainite curbing next to the walk, allowed the soil to slope down along the face of the porch, still have clearance between the house wood and the soils surface, to continue to slope across the face of the house, and finally continue across the side yard lawn at a 2% slope the whole way. Those conditions don't exist and can not be easily created at your front stoop. You could add bluestone on top of the stoop, but it will add a minimum of two inches in height. That will make your already high front step even higher, the threshold of the front door lower, and all the trim work on the porch to be redone (and possibly some flashing work as well). I don't think you'll get the return on your investment if you hire a good mason to do it. I think you will have nothing but problems if you have less than a skilled mason do it. Your landscaper should be able to level out a few pieces of bluestone and replace the dangerous ones, but it would not be a bad idea to get an estimate from a reputable mason who does this type of work all of the time.

In this day and age we all should be walking more and driving less. And visitors will get just as wet and tired walking up a 100' driveway as they will walking up a 100' path. Does a neighbor ever drop by? A UPS worker deliver a package? Does the OP ever host a party? In my view, pathways say "welcome to my home". Driveways say "cars live here". A long walkway leading to the front door can be a focal point in the landscape. It can be wide and straight, or narrow and winding, or angular and modern, or whatever appeals. It can branch off to the driveway, a side gate or any other logical destination. It can be used to create planting beds or be combined with a small patio. I see it as a huge improvement over a large expanse of lawn. I guess we differ on this one. My current home lacks a direct pathway to the front door. When cars are parked in the driveway, guests must squeeze by to get to the stairs leading to the front door. My house sits up off the street so creating a pathway would involve expensive retaining walls and I just can't afford it. But I would if I could.
