I would have it go to the driveway since I imagine most of your guests will be parking there when they visit. Plus, your home is set so far back from the street that putting in a walkway to the sidewalk will be extraordinarily long.

As for pavers vs. stone, I'd say that whatever material you have on the front step (hard to see in this picture) you could use for the walkway. Add a bit of a curve to the walkway to keep it from looking too grid-like and plant around it with shrubs or flower beds.

Agree with everything Sabrina said. Consider the local weather too. Does it snow? Does it rain a lot? The local climate should impact your material and design choices.

I'd agree with connecting with the drive rather than the sidewalk. In most cases, I dislike those long, always too narrow, arrow-like walkways that bisect a front yard and that many seem to think are a requirement. Not!! A curving pathway is always more welcoming. And I too would opt for a material that coordinates with - if not matches - whatever is surfacing the entry/front porch.

I disagree on this one. I'm a strong believer that pathways should lead visitors from the sidewalk directly to the front door. It keeps the emphasis on the entryway rather than the parking area. It is more pedestrian friendly and less car-centric. When vehicles are parked in the driveway, visitors are forced to either maneuver around cars/trucks, or walk on the grass. A pathway could be a wonderful landscape feature that compliments your lovely home.

What is pedestrian friendly about a 100' (or longer) walkway? And in the pouring rain? And what about those areas where there are no sidewalks and limited or no street-side parking? I've said this before but maybe worth saying again - the entry doesn't change regardless of where the walkway originates so why not locate it where it will be the most heavily used? At the very least, there will already be a walkway leading from the drive to the entry in the above situation, so simply emphasize based on that.

Just an aside but it is pretty diffcult in this day and age not to be car-centric :-) Pedestrians are a rarity unless in a very urban setting

In this day and age we all should be walking more and driving less. And visitors will get just as wet and tired walking up a 100' driveway as they will walking up a 100' path. Does a neighbor ever drop by? A UPS worker deliver a package? Does the OP ever host a party? In my view, pathways say "welcome to my home". Driveways say "cars live here".

A long walkway leading to the front door can be a focal point in the landscape. It can be wide and straight, or narrow and winding, or angular and modern, or whatever appeals. It can branch off to the driveway, a side gate or any other logical destination. It can be used to create planting beds or be combined with a small patio. I see it as a huge improvement over a large expanse of lawn. I guess we differ on this one.

My current home lacks a direct pathway to the front door. When cars are parked in the driveway, guests must squeeze by to get to the stairs leading to the front door. My house sits up off the street so creating a pathway would involve expensive retaining walls and I just can't afford it. But I would if I could.

Tom..it will cost money and take time but will be attractive..make the path wide..we made ours as wide as possible but had to accommodate our trees..we use both the sdewalk and path..was NOT a waste to add the path..

I guess we may have to agree to disagree :-) I will say that very few homes in my area have walkways that lead to the street - in many cases the street is a significant distance away from the house and having a walkway lead directly from the street to the door is just impractical or very awkward. And never gets used. And I have had more clients ask to have a walkway redesigned to be more convenient to them and to visitors that park in the drive or adjacent parking pad (and not on the street, if allowed) than those that want a sidewalk-to-entry walkway. In fact, I can think of none that have asked for a walkway from the street to the entry but mnay that ave asked for the removal of such. So at least in my area this concept is not a high priority requirement at all.

I would just add that there is no dictated, uniform approach to this issue. Every setting and site is different, regional preferences may prevail and it is always the client's decision in the end. It is the designer's responsibility to reflect those desires or decisions to the maximum benefit of the site.

I see no reason you can not do both.

I wouldn't go to the sidewalk. Choose whatever material you like that goes with your home and put walkway from house to driveway.

when salesmen come they ALWAYS use the path we put in..I like having both walkways..in my opinion Dig Doug's Designs drawing has more curb appeal than a plain expanse of lawn..I think builders, landscape architects etc eliminate the direct path to the front door to save money - not necessarily because they think it's unattractive..Denita posted some beautiful walkways..

The house is too far from the street to make a walk through the lawn look reasonable. consider widening the drive by adding a more decorative walk abutting it. What have you got edging the left side of drive? Do something compatible with that. Pavers.
