cleaning glass tiles in shower
Comments (2)We have a glass tile backsplash in our kitchen. I don't baby it (my backsplash over the range sometimes needs a thorough cleaning after using the oven esp after roasting using the convection fan or cooking at high temps, and I've thrown everything from BKF, to Dawn Power Dissolver, to OxyClean, etc., at it to clean the residual grease and discoloration, and the tile looks pretty much brand new). Outside of avoiding cleansers that might scratch the tile itself, or anything that might degrade the grout (Bill V. has said to avoid bleach or bleach-containing products because they will do something to the grout or sealer, or both--I forget!), I've used different products and the tile is fine--no scratches, no cloudiness, no etching. I would think you could use most bathroom cleaners safely (when in doubt, always test on leftover tile or in an inconspicuous spot on your wall). Glass tile isn't porous (or as porous) as other types of tile (no need to seal glass tile, I've been told), so should be ok with whatever product(s) you use to clean your shower floor and sink....See MoreHelp! Comments (13)You can keep the same elements but try mixing up the tile size and patterns. In one room the tile is set in a basic stacked pattern, in the next a running bond, an the other set in a diamond pattern, a herringbone, etc. Small standard subways in one room, then larger rectangles in the next. Etc. Pennyrounds, basket weave, yadda yadda. Cabinets? The boys can have a more masculine vanity, essentially a basic rectangular "block" of a vanity with simpler lines. No fancy ogees on the countertop, a simpler rounded over 90-degree edge on the rectangular slab with a rectangular sink. The daughters room can be more feminine, maybe a breakfront vanity with a slab top that flows around the breakfront with an ogee edge. More curves, softer to the eye. You're still staying within the same range of material and even color, just mixing up the shapes. In the end, we like what we like. You could always bring your daughter in to the design phase. Depending on her age, you can let her run with it, or if you're nervous doing that, offer her an A/B selection where you'll be happy with either A or B. Make it fun. Or you can keep control of the large elements and let her choose accents. I built my house when my daughter was five years old, we got around to finishing out her bedroom the next year. I asked her for design input in her bedroom, she wanted a "mousehole bed." She drew out a few sketches and this is what we ended up with: It's not anything I ever would have conceived on my own. So sometimes the kids can help you stretch your own creative element....See Moredrip stains on shower and surrounding tiles HELP!
Comments (6)I cannot tell, are those ceramic tiles? If so you could safely use LimeAWay. If those are hard water stains the LimeAWay will remove them. The first treatment I would try is to get a can of Easy Off oven cleaner, the blue, fume free can. It will still have some fumes tho so use ventilation. It is a fantastic shower and tub cleaner. Just spray it down good, let it soak for a while then scrub with a scrubber type sponge and possibly a brush for the grout areas. Once this is all done you may need to use some spray bleach around the bottom edge where I think I see some mold? I can say, I have never seen any hard water streaks such as this, I hope someone has not previously used something harsh that etched the tiles and left these streaks. Please report back your results and good luck.......See MoreAre these tiles DIY fixable?
Comments (5)TFW: If we were to DIY, I'd just be trying to remove the tiles (which are already falling off), clean up the underbed (whatever it is), and lay a small stretch of new, uncracked tiles that will be functional until we remodel the bathroom in full. Cat: I agree, I think the shower was likely improperly done in this bathroom by the previous owner. I have been hoping that molding/rotting wouldn't extend throughout the whole shower, but that's certainly a fear.......See MoreHeidi M
