Woodworking Organizing the Home Design Dilemma

Need help - computer design cabinet issue.

Hi there...

I originally started this topic for office/den but then soon realized I really need to solve one problem before moving on to the next problem.

I need help designing a cabinet to hold all my pc equipment and peripherals. I have 25" from a doorframe to wall, 102" height, and would like to keep it no more than 24" W. Pull out slide for printer and pull out slide for photo scanner. I am running a home pc and a work pc from same monitor and keyboard so would probably need a kvk switch of some sort... I want to hide the mess and have everything neat, tidy and easy access.

This is what I am trying to fit in.

Asus Tower - 7w X 16 X 16

Dell Thin Client - 1.5 X 7 X 7.5

Cable Modem - 7.5 X 2 X 7.25

Asus Router - 16 X 10 X 8 (with att extended)

Canon Printer - 12 X 15 X 6 (would like this to be roll out)

Epson Perfection v600 Photo Scanner - 19.5 X 11 X 5 (would like this to be roll out)

Scale - 9 X 9 X 3 (would like this to be roll out)

USB Hub - 2.25 X 9 X 1 (with wires plugged in ) 3.5

External Dvd Drives @ 7 - 6 X 5.5 X .25

External Drive 5 Terrabytes - 7 X 5 X 1.75

External Drives 10 Terrabytes - 6 X 7 X 2

External Drives portable - 5@ blocked - 3.25H X 5.75W x 5.5D

HP 2009M Monitor - 7 X 20 X 17

Belkin 12 outlit surger protector @2 - 3.97 x 1.1 x 11.4 inches

Earbuds 6 pair - plus cords

Hanging file drawer.

Keyboard and Mouse -

I have some photos from Pinterest to try and cobble together something that will work for me.

I had planned on doing a floating shelf for the keyboard, mouse, and monitor and have hidden cords to the cabinet of wires.

Zip tie the wires labeled every 6" or so and mounted to the cabinet wall, and proper ventilation for everything... with easy access to the surge protectors... back access and a hidden door from top to bottom for extra cord storage, earbuds, etc... basically cram everything together neat and organized and preferably on wheels in case I need to move it without tearing everything down. I would also need easy front access to external DVD drives etc.

I have tried to sketch this out, I tried to use sketch up... I am trying to use mockups with carboard versions of it but can't seem to get it figured out.

I am adding photos of what I have going on and what would be elements to put together.

Please help me draw this out or if you know someone that is handy at drawing or know of an easy free online program. Thank you so much!

I think I asked this before but do you have a closet in the space . I have no feel for the space you are working with but there are so many choices for wireless stuff can you not use some of that to get a bit cleaner look. I need a floor plan to scale with all windows doorways amrked and all measurement s marked. I see the ideas but honestly none of those are going to work with all the stuff youhave unless you have a place for stuff like a wireless router for instance. My husband has 4 monitors a tower 2 printers , file cabinet and some bookshelves ina space that is 8’ x8.5’ with a corner desk. I need to know the size of the space . Hubby also has the wireless router that serves my office space and 2 students in their rooms with laptops. I am not in the least computer savvy as to layouts but I did hate all the wires so hubby got his all attached to the back of his desk now I can vacuum without disturbing wires . I have a Mac so no tower needed for me and I keep my files in a basement storage room off the office . I need a drafting table in my space .

Given your current situation, perhaps you would be more successful with a computer armoire for your office so you can close the doors on the workspace. You're never going to have a 'minimal' space like you have illustrated with all that equipment and all the wires involved.

I've painted over 3,000 kitchen cabinets and I've never used lacquer. Some guys are married to that stuff and that's why they push it. YOU DO NOT NEED LACQUER. Lacquer is one of several hundred options. A quality 100% acrylic enamel or a hybrid like Advance, Cabinet Coat, etc. work well on kitchen cabinets when the substrate is properly prepared. Properly prepared is super, super clean with Dirtex or Jasco TSP substitute, sanded dull, primed and two coats of quality paint. The paint is probably soft due to excessive coats and improper drying times. Some questions for your painters. 1. What did they use to clean the cabinets? 2. What primer did they use? It should have been D&E specified primer. 3. What is bleeding through? A rough surface? The paint is slow to dry. If there is any dust movement in your house, the finish will be rough. Change the air filters and switch off the furnace during painting.

Is there a computer tool (other than EQ) to help design a quilt?

Lafonda, are you concerned that EQ can't do what you want? It can - there is a custom layout feature and you can create custom block sizes and plop them wherever you want. I Googled "Quilt design software" and the first dozen or so responses are about EQ, but apparently Quilt Pro is still available. Something called Pattern Jam came up, too. Donna

I love the Bright Green Office; looks very logical. I love your room. If you want some art in the room, get it first and let it drive your color scheme. Get rid of everything in the room, except what you need to work in the room, and organize it into boxes, bins, what ever so you can think straight about what goes where when. Then paint the room a nice soothing color you like...pick a color then go two tints lighter! And paint! Then decide where the desk will go and set up the computer. Find a concealer for wires and plugs online or at the container store. Add shelves and designated closed storage, even if it is baskets or fabric bins with clear large name tag designation for each bin.....get a perch for the kitty, and your are pretty done......anyway that is just my suggestion, but it might help?

I am trying to sketch up a diy cabinet so far..I had considered an armoire but there isn't a lot of those on the market. I put the room floor plan in the previous discussion.

My scratchpad - bolded measurements are the size of shelf/cubbyhole/drawer

starting off at the bottom super rough outline of a cabinet on wheels still sketching.

top of cabinet router

18 or 16 Wx22D 10" high - one shelf cubby - with doors

External portable @7 or 5 = 6.5HX 5DX3W - these can be turned into a stacked block - using reusable double-sided sticky tape that I used for the external DVDs.

External Drive 5 Terrabytes - 1.75Hx7D X 5W -can be on a separate mini shelf below or above
External Drives 10 Terrabytes - 7HX6D X 2W - can be next to - placed next to the above mini
External Dvd Drive - 3.25H X 5.5Dx 5.75W - this can be placed next to the 10 terabytes drive

this would give it an appx 15-17 width depth this can be two small doors.

One 12 port USB hub 1" HX9"Dx2.25" W

(hub count for this shelf - 2 drives are plugged into the router so not in the hub - 13 cords to 12 port hub - 1 power cord from hub to One 12 outlet Belkin surge protector and 1 cord from hub to the back of pc.)

Earbuds can be sneaked into this space as well and included on cord count.

18 or 16 Wx22D X 18H - need to map out the cord count and ethernet
