Need Help & Advice for Kitchen Cabinet Painting Issues

Hi Guys -

I would love some advice and guidance from you all. Our kitchen cabinets were painted with a water-oil hybrid paint - Dunn Edwards Aristowall - and the paint isn't coming out well at all. It's showing things through and not really hard and they have had to do so many more coats of paint then I would have ever expected. I have started to ask a couple other wood finishers what they would recommend and every one of them says we must use a laquer paint and have it all repainted. I'm not sure what to do here as the cabinets feel rough and the paint feels a bit shallow and soft - even though it's been painted so many times.

Do you think we should only use a laquer paint on our cabinets? Are there any issues with painting over the hybrid paint with another paint?

I've painted over 3,000 kitchen cabinets and I've never used lacquer. Some guys are married to that stuff and that's why they push it. YOU DO NOT NEED LACQUER. Lacquer is one of several hundred options.

A quality 100% acrylic enamel or a hybrid like Advance, Cabinet Coat, etc. work well on kitchen cabinets when the substrate is properly prepared. Properly prepared is super, super clean with Dirtex or Jasco TSP substitute, sanded dull, primed and two coats of quality paint.

The paint is probably soft due to excessive coats and improper drying times.

Some questions for your painters.

1. What did they use to clean the cabinets?

2. What primer did they use? It should have been D&E specified primer.

3. What is bleeding through?

A rough surface? The paint is slow to dry. If there is any dust movement in your house, the finish will be rough. Change the air filters and switch off the furnace during painting.

To answer your questions:

The paint they used was Dunn Edwards Aristowall. Do you think this paint is okay to use on cabinets?

1. I don't believe they used anything to clean the cabinets - just sanded and wiped down (they were new cabinets that were just made)

2. I am waiting on an answer for the primer from them so not sure with that

3. In regards to whats bleeding - you can see putty under the white where they patched some of the wood and filled holes, there are a ton of little lines and scratches and everything and a lot of it just feels somewhat rough to the touch. Most cabinets I've had in the past were really smooth - you could spill something on them and nothing would get stuck because they're so smooth. These are somewhat rough like they need more sanding or like dust is stuck in the paint.

I am pretty spatially challenged, but I did just wrestle an 11 ft x 11 ft kitchen into something like submission, so I will weigh in here with a few ideas. First, what will dwarf everything else is your fridge. If you could install it so that only the front -- rather than the side as well -- shows from most vantage points, it won't loom as large. So, if you are willing to invest in replacing your windows and moving some plumbing, some variant on this might work: The lower cabinets next to the fridge are pulled out to match its depth. The windows above the sink and DW would be any array similar to those of laurainlincoln (with higher windowsills) or jenwrens (sills to the counter), both of which yield an enviably large area of glass. (Please note that I am pretty vague about the entrance to the kitchen from your 48" hallway. You obviously need a certain entryway width, but it could be achieved in several ways by messing with the fridge wall and the end of the range set of cabinets.) Looking from the DR, people would see the peninsula and either the end of the cabinets flanking the range or, if you prefer, a counterdepth wall. I too took down the wall between my modest kitchen and the DR. My kitchen is very different (yes, I would sell my soul for a lovely run of windows) but from the DR it does show the peninsula and the end of a run of cabinets, with no wall. Your peninsula would be longer and better looking; mine is truncated by a boxed-in chimney and shelves that were added to it to the depth of the countertop. Hope this stimulates the germ of an idea. What is the color of the cabinet (it's hard to tell in your photo)? I painted my living room Classic Silver from Behr paints. It's a beautiful, medium colored silvery gray that looks great with about every color. You could look on Behr's website or any other paint website, and virtually paint a living room. That should give you an idea how the color would work but I also recommend buying paint samples first before buying enough paint to paint the room. It will save you frustration, time, and money. Before choosing the Classic Silver, I purchased two other gray paint samples along with the Classic Silver, painted large enough sections on my living room wall, looked at the paint colors for a few days before making my choice. I made sure the color worked well on sunny and cloudy days.

You’re going to have to 100% start over. Concrete was a very bad idea. You’ll be ripping out that stained and cracked mess very soon. Might as well do that now. Even laminate performs better than concrete. Here is how I would expect a pro to spray paint kitchen cabinets. An amateur job should follow the same path. A brush painted job would differ slightly in that you wouldn't hang the doors to paint. You'd place them on a work table or easel instead. It's time intensive work, and should take 7-14 days for a Pro to accomplish completely and cost between 8--10K depending on kitchen size and amount of detail in cabinets. Remove doors and drawer fronts. Remove hinges and hardware. Clean with Spic and Span Rinse and let dry. Scrape any loose finish. Fill any damaged spots or hardware holes that won't be reused. Sand fill smooth. Scuff sand the rest. Tack off dust. Hang in dust free paint booth with wires through hardware points to spray both sides. Or lay on a spinner, and do one side at a time. Tack off dust again. Spray with shellac based primer. Scuff sand again. Tack off dust. Spray with second coat of primer. Spray with first finish coat of a polyurethane enamel (DIY) Or conversion varnish, (Pro product) . NOT house paint. Never house paint. Spray with second coat. If glazing is to occur, that is next. Spray with clear over glaze that is compatible with base coat and glaze. Add more molding or decorative details to boxes, filling nail holes and sanding smooth. Repeat prep process with face frames and exposed cabinet sides using plastic to create a spray booth on site. If interiors are to be done, they are done before face frames and sides. Interiors are difficult, and add both time and expense to the job. Most interiors are laminate and don't accept paint well. Allow everything to fully cure. That's 7-14 days. Clean hinges and hardware and clear coat if you're keeping the old hardware. Install new (or old) hinges and hardware. Re-install doors and drawers and adjust for proper clearances. If you are receiving or doing a job without this amount of effort, then you are not getting a quality job. You are getting a poor quality job that will not last.

In retrospect I should have dug deeper into the painter’s statement that he has done waterbased paint before since he clearly specializes in CV, but he’s been in the business a long time and came highly recommended so we went for it. Lesson learned. As a disclaimer, you are a bit past my knowledge here, as I have not really used the chemcraft waterborne products. I don't think Chemcraft Aquaset is a water-based paint. It is a solvent based paint that is waterborne, it has fairly low amounts of solvent, especially when compared to conversion varnish. Also, it likely doesn't create formaldehyde in the curing process as conversion varnish does. I don't want to freak you out but you should mention to Chemcraft that you are pregnant. I believe that Aquaset has an, "Avoid exposure during pregnancy" warning. As a disclaimer I just googled "chemcraft aquaset material safety data sheet" to get that information so it may not be correct. I am unconvinced his experience with water borne products is the problem, I think you are in danger of post hoc fallacy. I bet that I could switch out a pure solvent based conversion varnish with a waterborne conversion varnish and most people couldn't tell the difference in application. ---- The idea that he will do the job as he originally agreed to do it but will not warranty it, will not fly unless he also offers you an option to get your money back. He can't arbitrarily force you into a worse position than you agreed to originally. You are essentially scrapping the original contract (which we can assume had a workmanship warranty by default) and creating a new contract (disclaiming the warranty) without any consideration (compensation). I would insist that he perform the work as agreed in the original contract with all warranties intact, or return the money. Technically, you might be able to get more, but cash in hand might be better for everyone.

New cabinets should be sprayed IMO. When you have felt cabinets in the past that were ultra smooth, they were probably factory finished or sprayed by a cabinet maker. It is possible to brush/roll cabinets and have them come out smooth though. It sounds like your painters just aren't skilled to be honest. And why are new cabinets needing to be patched?

Thanks for the feedback. They were sprayed (I must have forgotten to mention that). They are custom wood cabinets - all handmade from scratch (I don't really love the ready made options) so I just mean wood filler in the little cracks of where all the wood trims come together. Like the joints, where base meets cabinets, cabinets meet crown, etc. I love the woodwork - just not loving the actual finish of the paint. Like I said, the main problem is how rough it feels. It feels a little gritty, not super smooth.

Those gaps should be filled with caulk, not wood filler or putty. Were the cabinets sprayed on site or in their shop? This is one of the problems with installing painted cabinets after all the pieces have been painted. The gaps need to be caulked or installed very tight, which is usually impossible. Once caulked, that caulk really needs to be painted because that caulk rarely matches the paint color exactly and even if it does perfectly match, it will end up looking bad eventually because unpainted caulk attracts dust and dirt that can't be cleaned. Sprayed cabinets should be perfectly smooth when done though, so they need to be sanded and sprayed again to make it right.

Using wood filler will usually change the tone of the cabinet since wood filler isn't of the same species or wood grain. Can you post a pic?
